Just want to open a can of worms here!
If Toy Truckers have ONE choice to pick what would it be?

I do not like the new Tacoma's from 05+ so an 85 would be my choice no question.

Make it the rare 22r-e turbo and its a no brainer for anyone.

Depends what you want it for? Have a family? Not so good in a 2nd gen pickup. I have a 85' but it's been parked no op'ed sence I started a family in 2011.

Traded the 2015 TRD Pro 6spd Supercharged on a PowerWagon and could not be happier. My 2011 Tacoma with the TX Baja package (Added by me) is still treating me great. My 1985 Toyota never skips a beat.

Sorry to pick up an old thread...
I've heard that since the old highway speed limit was 55 mph, the old trucks are not really meant to drive for a 10 hour highway road trip at 75 mph. Anyone have any experience on this one? I've never been in a hilux (1983-1988) or an 1988-1995 toyo pickup, and those are the old ones I'm considering. I'm posting here because I'm really wanting a dirtbike hauler from Kansas to Colorado and the new versus old dilemma is fresh in my mind, but need it to handle some miles.

I'm not sure if the diffs were regeared by the previous owner of my 92TOY but with the 22re 5spd on 31 in tires im doing 3k rpm at 73ish mph. That makes for a long road trip. But she never got hot and oil pressure was just above center for my last 7 hr trip.

I just sold my old toy and I ran 70 or 80 every where I went here in Texas don't be afraid the 22re can take anything you can dish except going under water I did that one time and that was the only way I ever killed one

My first truck was an '85 Extra Cab 4x4 and I'd love to have that particular truck back. I drove it from '85 ~ '99, 192,000 miles and never had any serious issues with the engine. I have a 2015 Tacoma now and I can tell you for a fact, the '15 rides and handles MUCH better than the '85 but I'd still pick the '85!

My 03 does 3k rpm at 75. But if I got one I'd have to put a 2.7 in place of the 22re.

I have to say, my 2015 rides better and has more room but an extra cab 85 new from the factory? Hell yes I would drive that over a new one any day.

Speaking of one of my 85s got good use on Halloween for a trunk or treat with the kids.

One can never have too many light bars.
I'll say it... I'd rather have the new one!
