Anyone heard from Zach?

 

He's busy in Spokane. Working extra time and having lots of problems with his dogs. Said he hasn't had time to get on here much.

 

So im going to replace/upgrade/get new recovery gear and was wondering what you guys were using brand wise?

Im currently just using a hodge podge of stuff that was more for other uses than just recovery. So figure I should pick up some more stuff and stuff more specific for off-roading/recovery and all the same brand. Just an example i have 6 shackles and every one of them is different lol.

 

They don't necessarily have to match, just as long they are rated (and rated for the task!), in good condition, and you know how to use it.
Since I spoke up, here's my list:

Hi-Lift Jack: OK, on this, yes, accept no substitutes. I have learned.

Hi-lift offroad base
Hi-lift ORK kit (turns the hi-lift into a winch, haven't had to use it yet)
some shackles
ARB 30' recovery strap
Wheeler's Offroad 12' tree/recovery strap
lots of gloves
reflective vest
t-handle spade shovel (like you find for working in the yard)
Gerber folding shovel (absolutely awesome as a pick in the snow)
sand ladders (similar to TracMats, not sure of manufacture - Penguins_CC had the hook-up)
rotopax gas can
rotopax water can
Fiskars folding saw
some random chemicals and a clean-up kit, plus some rags
cheap tools
WARN 9.5XP winch with MasterPull synthetic line and MasterPull hook

Probably some other stuff I'm forgetting

Most of it fits in a nice ammo can I found at a garage sale (I think it was for an M61 Vulcan), which is surprisingly small yet holds a ton.

 

I have little experience with this stuff but have done some research. What about line dampers?

More for metal cable. Not really needed for synthetic line. You can throw/tie a jacket over the line and do the same thing for free.

 

Did anyone know you could do this on your steroes that has the USB port? I always used a MP3 player.

I talked to Bill Burke and he said he did some testing where they tried to break synthetic, and the line wants to contract some before dropping. Still not something you should be right up next to when that happens. As for the blankets, he said that they are useless no matter the type of line; there's simply not enough force pushing down to counteract the amount of force contracting or flinging about. A 2 lbs coat isn't going to help against several thousand pounds of tension.

Is anyone planning a meet/trail trip this weekend on 14th, 15th?

 

I think it's on hold right now, the 3rd I had for him is an 8" and the rear in his truck is an 8.4" he's got the correct front assembly I think, bummer though.

 

I got all that covered. Its more just nothing is the same. Like my shackles. I have like four different sizes. Figure ill build up something just for the truck and go back to using the current stuff around the house.

Thanks for the list. I have most of that stuff. I don't have the hi-lift ORK kit mostly cause come-a-long type devices scare me for any sort of big load. Its scary when even low load ones fail (which ive seen)

My tool kit is something I plan to refine a bit more. Right now it covers a lot of stuff but not quite everything.

Any particular brands people like for snatch blocks? Last thing im really undecided on

 

I was going to do it at JBLM. But if Naval base Everett has one, I can do it there since I spend my weekends at Everett anyways.

 

I got a 8.4" from Eugene OR yesterday. Ready for the install.

 

Great! Glad you found one, wish I could help out. I'll be busy this weekend though, then headed out of country for two weeks.

 

I'm not caring one way or another, but I guess I do have an ARB block. It's identical to the one just about everyone else makes.
If you want to be all hardcore, you could probably get one from Crosby or a different overhead rigging company that has to adhere to much stricter quality assurances.
