The other observation we should consider is whether you have factory tow package with trans cooler or not. I am curious to see how that affects temps as well. I got my gauge yesterday. I'll install it today and tomorrow I'll be making a 250 mile trip with the rzr on the trailer. I'll post up results.

If some one has done this please chime in.

Iv been wondering what changes in temp I would see if I was to bypass the built in radiater cooler and only used the TRD cooler in the front. I'm just not sure if it's eficient enough due to its small size. Iv heard of horror stories especially with frontiers of the internals breaking loose and antifreeze and trans fluid mixing and causing massive damage! I haven't heard of many stories (if any) of the tacomas having this problem.

I do know the radiater cooler is good for helping the trans fluid reach warmer temps while ideling ( like in warm up mode on cold mornings)

Got mine in and mostly setup. I had to reprogram for the '12+ version. Does anyone know how to program the tq converter lockup to work?

I'm buying a UG and was wondering if I should get the MX v1.3 or the EM 1.2? The reason I ask is because the website suggests 1.2 but I'm not sure if it comes with the ability to read transmission temps.

1.2 does NOT read trans temps, period. The 1.3 does. They suggest the 1.2 for people who don't want to end up possibly getting an error message and having a heart attack on why it does so, but it has been explained here how to fix that.

As im waiting for mine, i was wondering if anyone has improved their mileage using the ultragauge? On my wife's civic, theres two different instantaneous monitors for mpg and it really makes you change your habits to keep it in the good range.

I used to use instant MPG but I now use engine load % to see how much gas I am giving her. It does help show when I push it too much. Lol

Has anyone tried to get the redemption sent in to UG ? I spent nearly 2hrs just to get mine done , filled out / printed / scanned all their paperwork , attached it to an email and sent it in . We'll see if they actually pay it out , lot of bs for a lousy $9 , wtf ....

My wifes Subaru has a needle monitor for efficiency as well. Once we both became accustomed to what that needle really meant, it became useful.

I have used the instant MPG on the UG before, but not as a permanent gauge so it was tough to get accustomed to it like with my wifes car.

Here's the thing. My truck is NOT my wife's Subaru. The way they get off the line is certainly not the same. It's not uncommon for single digit MPGs to persist through the acceleration cycle in my truck, even when I'm not gunning it. Contrary to popular belief, accelerating super slow is NOT the best way to get good mileage. There is a happy balance between gunning and babying it.

Now that I have the Instant MPG as a permanent gauge, I should be able to get used to it and find out the best way to accelerate off the line.

    So here's what I observed:
    Trans:
150-180 seems to be normal operating range in cooler (30-40 deg) weather when towing. It did hit 190 once on a long gradual incline but then dropped back off. Even towing 21-2200 lbs, 4th is 20 degrees cooler than overdrive.

    Engine:
190-194 is where coolant temp stays regardless of any factors.

    Mileage:
Instant mpg shows that when towing, 4th is significantly better than overdrive for all situations except downhill. I stayed pretty consistently at 70 and played with watching what happened going from 4th to overdrive. Trans temps go up immediately and mileage goes down.

Overall, I am very happy I bought this thing. It is totally worth the $100 I spent to be able to monitor trans temp. DTE feature is nice to have as well. The avg mpg feature is not super accurate, but it's pretty close. I've been using the windshield mount and it works great, but I am going to mount mine with Velcro on the hazard switch I think. I like that spot, it's not on my windshield and is easy to reach. Thanks for posting this tool. Without TW, I wouldn't have found or considered it otherwise.

the question is... what temps are you looking at.

There are 2 temp probes in the trans... you want to monitor the PAN temps... not the torque converter output temps as the latter is artificially inflated due to how the torque converter works and position of the temp probe.

I don't know which it monitors, but I would be willing to bet simply based on how quickly the temp changes that it is the converter probe. But...if it is the hotter of the two and is still no warmer that 190, I'll take it.

I was literally watching the instant mpg function. Pretty neat stuff.

I still haven't gotten mine do display that one. It is one of the gauges I put on the first page but I get the error message. I'll have to dig around and see if I can find the right code for it.

Hey guys, finally got my gauge in. I don't see trans temps even as an option to display, nevermind seeing an error code. Any help? I did verify its the mx 1.3. When i scroll through the gauges, theres no trans temp option.

I was also hoping to be able to display ambient temp, as the good people of toyota decided not to have this on the 2015. Is this not available?

    Thanks guys

I should also add i had them preprogram for tacoma, but i dont know how to verify that

Seems like the trans gauge is originally listed under" Mgauge". Disregard the four or five pages of Greek instructions. Use the codes posted in this thread to get it programmed.
