Today at work they said they're testing some people to weld. I asked my foreman(a welder too) and the 2 welders in our crew what mode of transfer is it... They looked at me like I'm retarded and said "mig..." I said
"I know but like.. Short circuit, spray, what?"
They had no idea what I was talking about. Then I asked how the bend test are. They said "groove with a backup bar. Then you grind the backup bar off and backweld"

I was so confused ! Lol like

"Wait. On 3/8" plate, y'all grind the backup bar off and backweld? Don't just gouge it off and bend it?"
"No. If you just grind it off then that root is gonna break for sure" lmao and said"I been welding 10 years and every mig/flux test I've took has been that way"

Then i asked why they grind the backup strap off rather than gouge and they said the gouger puts trash in it.
I told em my last job was nothing but welding, gouging, and welding followed by getting UT'd.

They looked at me like I'm stupid and pretty sure they think I don't know what I'm talking about.

Someone please tell me I'm not crazy for being confused lol. Aren't you supposed to get good.enough penetration and fusion in the root to not need the backwelding?
That's how the bend test were in school and at my last job so I'm just confused

Just remember that some places x-ray and UT their (your) welds, it depends on what the client wants. But some services out there have 2500# pressure so it needs to hold

^That's really cute. What welder are you using?

I think I'm going to try a Dragon next. Might need more coat hangers...

That is odd? I have to use a combination of Internet Explorer and Google Chrome to post pics. I have to use IE to post but Chrome to get my pics. Prolly has to do with work 'puters. I use at least 5 differnt machines on any given day.

Anyways, enjoy what I got so far.

I hope to have my fog lights this evening, then I can cut out the opening for the lights. I do want some off road lights to put between the bar uprights, but have no idea what I want. Whatever they are they better be cheap. I will for sure eff them up somehow.

Winch cut out will be going in next. Anyone feel like measuring a cable roller fairlead? I need to know how big the fairlead cutout needs to be.

You just need the size of the cut out in the bumper for the fairlead or is there a size difference between hawse and roller fairlead sizes?

I'm pretty sure the roller fairleads are bigger. If I make it big enough for a roller rairlead, it will work for a hawse FL as well. I'm stuck at work for the next 2 days, working 12's, so I'm not in a big hurry.
