*THE RTT Owners Thread (With BS)*

I forgot I broke my travel cover zipper the first time I folded it up. Maybe that was user error but I don't consider myself an idiot with zippers. I know their limits and I won't push them.

But Bobby replaced it free of charge. I just put it on a week ago. It is MUCH better. YKK zippers finally, the plastic tube that slides through the track on the frame is much stiffer which was harder to install around the corners but it doesn't slide around like the original did, and the inside of the cover has nice reinforcements welded on instead of a few flaps loosely sewn on.

 

The fit and finish of the newer Ruggedized continually has gotten better. You had one of the earlier ones. I do too. My Ruggedized XL is one of the earlier ones and it's still an awesome tent but being able to look at it side by side with my new Autana Ruggedized you can see lots of small improvements.

Tepui has made several improvements because of feedback from customers, such as straps with buckles for the straps that hold the tent closed instead of Velcro ones. There are others as well. So the feedback we hear from customers is great because it helps to improve the product.

 

But I want to keep my stuff and dog shaded/protected from elements in the back. Plus it looks so cool...

That's what I would like but I can't find a damn picture of anyone with a RTT on the roof of an access cab. It's gonna hang over the front and rear 3 inches...

 

This would be a challenge(having both mounted at the same time) due to the mounting system of each. Not sure how you would attach the bed rack to the rails if the soft top covers the tacoma side rails.
With that said, it would be a very high setup for your single cab and am thinking that the center of gravity would be a bit too high.

Although I do think and know there have been racks built to fit underneath soft tops but, it is obvious that the soft top would be removed before an rtt was opened.

This I would guess is the best option. I think my aluminum rack weighs approx 35 lbs and is built to hold far more than just an rtt and the occupants. It takes no more than 5 minutes to install or remove.


How about a quality or custom bed rack and having a good canvas shop building a cover for it, mimicking a soft topper look?

 

That was another idea I had thought of, look for a boat shop that makes canvases, they usually do a good job, you can have the best of both worlds then

 

I think I figured that out. You just don't run the legs along the whole bed rail so you have room for soft top mounts. I have an access cab but I see a lot of people mount on top of double cabs and I see a lot of bed racks even with the top of the cab... Can't be too top heavy right?

 

I'd say the EPDM rubber that they use on the top of Campers would be a great fabric to use. Durable, waterproof, malleable, and a bit of elasticity. Canvas will not be waterproof, and if it is, it will need to be reapplied often.

 

How about next time i come over ill crawl on your roof and you can go around corners with me up there to see what it feels like? Im about the same weight as an autana ruggedized

 

I had this rack made so it'll fit the RTT under the bestop. I still have storage under for coolers and other stuff.

 

Hahahahahahahahahahaha I'm not worried about corners. I'm worried about when my back tire is 4 feet off the air and I need to gas it to keep myself from rolling because I've been there and it was scary...

 

That's cool but you have to remove the whole top right? Or do bestops fold up? I don't know how to work mine hahaha

 

The forward bar of the top tucks under the RTT, I then pull the pins on each side of the top for the other bars and place it on top of the cab.

 

Ah access cab, I got your truck mixed with BabyTaco's single cab .
You are correct and have seen RTT's on roof racks many times. I am not a physics major but, in order to have the soft top on and the bed rack safely above the roof line of it will make a difference off road.

So is a roof rack out of the question?

I would love to put it on my roof, just worried about my access cab being too small and it looking funny. Have you ever seen it done before? Either way, above the cab or above the soft top it will be at the same height. I just wonder if it would be less sketchy/top heavy mounted that high over my bed opposed to above my cab?

I was thinking long and hard about mounting the RTT on the access cab as well, I was going to put the RTT on the cab and then haul the motorcycles in the bed.

My concern wasn't hauling it while moving, but the extra weight when setup to camp being an issue. I had read that the cab wasn't as strong (obviously) compared to the DC's with the extra pillar between the sets of doors.

But, i may try it there just for kicks and giggles, once...

 

I ordered the rack and soft top at the same time. Its a bit high but i needed it for a trip across the US and did not have time to get a custom one made. Now as for the RTT I love it! But I do wish I would have ordered the ruggedized now. The bottom where the ladder conects is just to soft. I may endup adding my own dimond plate to it to stiffen it up.

 

Those are some sweet ideas there, but I don't get how you clamp your soft top down to the bedrails when you have the steel of the bed rack in your way...
