The Early model Borg Warner EFR turbos were prone to failure as well. They had turbine housing casting issues, but those weren't a failure problem. The failure problem was that so many people are used to Inconel turbine wheels. Those turbos can a handle over boost, which means over speeding the max rpm, by a fairly large rpm. The Inconel is very strong.

The EFR turbine wheel is titanium aluminide. Strong and I think, 30% lighter than Inconel. However, it cannot handle over speed, like Inconel. So people weren't limiting the the speed of acceleration of the turbo, and over boosting small turbos, versus stepping up to the next size. Turbine wheels were flying apart! Took a while for people to understand that, despite BW giving out explicit instructions with each turbo. Even has a port on the compressor housing for a speed sensor. But what does BW know. ;)

Yeah, I'm of the opinion that most failures are user error. You need to understand the quality and capabilities of the equipment you are working with...

In other news, the trans issue is back. I think there is a loose signal connector or the stupid shop didn't disconnect the batter before welding and fried the ECU. Going to start testing the ECU this weekend.

Looking to buy a new DD and get rid of this 1980 POS Tercel. I priced out the new wheel bearing and clutch and it comes out more than the car is worth.

Not sure but was getting no/weird shifts and a shift solenoid code. Seems to drive fine now and no shift code with the FIC pulled out, however it didn't go into reverse once until I shut off the truck and restarted.

It's either the welding shop didn't disconnect the battery and damaged the ECU (or FIC) or the FIC had a bad flash (or went bad). Im leaning towards the FIC unit as it drives MUCH better with it out. Let me fix the O2 tomorrow before diagnosing any further.

Are you talking about the AEM FIC or the truck's ECU? It just seems like disconnecting the battery would be the simplest level of common sense at a *welding shop*. Heck even I knew that. Have you tried reseting your ECU (disconnect the positive terminal and touch it to the negative post)?

Honestly not sure whats going on. Had it just happen again. I turned off the truck and restarted and trans ran great :notsure:

Right now no codes but if it could throw a "ghetto" code, it would for the turn signals I just wired up...

I just blew bacon and eggs everywhere. Turn signal - turbo kill switch. So you're not coming to Phil's?

Paul, as our token Asian in the group, you should look at this Chinese turbo build and do some lo mein, teriyaki, ninja, Kung fu to beat it into submission.

Have you tried wiring the turn signals to the shift solenoid? Maybe you could signal the transmission to shift

Right turn = up shift, left turn = down shift
