20211015 - Carrier Bearing Old And New

On the left is the Spicer 211750-1X center bearing and new stake nut (90179-18009). Spent $70 on the new parts. The old one I suspect is original to the truck (168k miles)

@CrustyTaco I noticed a vibration in the drivetrain when decelerating. Assuming the driveshaft is vibrating? Is this why you replaced the carrier bearing?

I had been getting some vibration/shudder at low speeds - consistently when in reverse, and less consistently on takeoff in the forward gears. I added 3 degree axle shims (since I'm lifted) and replaced the carrier bearing to try and see if that would help the situation. It did help some, but I'm still getting some shudder, and I think at this point it may be related to a slipping clutch.

I would test your carrier bearing for play to see if it needs to be replaced. Grab the drive shaft and push it around near the carrier bearing and see how much it moves. If you have more than a 1/2 to an inch of play it might be the cause of your vibration. Over time the rubber starts to crack and allows the center bearing to shift under load. In my picture here you can see a crack forming on the old one near the top (actually the bottom when mounted). I didn't have a ton of play, but I've also been trying to remove anything remotely rusty from my truck.

Drive shaft is solid, no movement. Back to the drawing board to chase down that vibration. Thanks for your help sir.
