My 20-year old oak colored interior rear view mirror is pretty loose. Every time I go to put up my windshield shade, it knocks the mirror out of whack. I found this part number, which seems to be the replacement from Toyota ($112 + shipping, wow):

Has anyone found a way, or has any suggestions, to tighten up the joint circled above? That's where mine is loose. It's the ball and socket on the mirror itself. I've looked for just the mirror, but haven't found one that doesn't include the map lights and that base unit. If worse comes to worse, I can get the whole thing, I was just wondering if there's another option.

Maybe there's an aftermarket mirror that mounts to that base...?

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
The ball and socket wears over the years I have done different things to tighten things up.

Some mirrors have a set screw to increase tension I can not remember if Toyota`s do

Depending How skilled you are drilling and tapping a set screw is an option.

Just how much time do you want to spend on the project?

I have plenty of time...I will give that a shot, thanks. I do have a drill press.

There's plenty of used mirrors on Ebay, but chances are they may be the same as mine.

I should have taken your advice and done a closer inspection. I ordered a new mirror, and it arrived yesterday. Upon removal of the old mirror, I discovered there is indeed a Philips screw on the back of the mirror itself you can tighten to firm up the ball socket. I adjusted and cleaned up the old mirror, it's as good as new; I most likely will return the replacement.

    Live and learn.

Anyone need a new oem oak colored rear view mirror for a discount? ;);) Or, I could keep the new mirror and send anyone who needs the original one for the cost of shipping.
