This raises a question. What happens with the taxes? If you search all over the US and find one in another state don't you have to pay the taxes of that state and then when you come home with it you have to pay them again to your home state when you register it in your home state?

There is a little risk, I agree. I will only work with a dealer that is accommodating and will send me random pictures of areas on the car to verify condition (frame, headlights, etc.). I also have them complete and fax/email a purchase agreement before I get there, so I already know the final maximum amount I will pay before I go. I have a cashiers check made at my bank with both the dealers and my name on it so that we both have to sign it before it can be cashed, this way if I don't agree with the price when I get there, the dealer can't take the check and cash it. Like I said, my first goal is to take the purchase agreement down to a local dealer and say, "Look, here is what I'm going to pay for an identical car in Wisconsin. It will cost me $500 to get there and back. If you can get within $500 of this price, I'll buy from you." It's definitely worked before, but sometimes it doesn't and I end up taking a road trip with my dad, something we both enjoy. I know this isn't for everyone.

You pay taxes in the state you register the vehicle. When I bought my Tacoma, I purchased it in Wisconsin for $27,000. Gave the dealer a check for exactly that amount, then paid sales tax on that number in Kansas when I registered it. Definitely a concern of mine too at first, but you don't have to worry about paying double tax.

This is unappealing to me, the truck is just too damn big. Aluminum is fine but will be more expensive to fix, and body shops will be less likely to know how to fix it.

When I see qualifiers such as "loaded with technology" all I see is issues with long-term reliability. I'd like to pay off the Tacoma, and keep it for 10-15 years and that's where the real savings kick in, by not buying something different every 5-7 years.

Technologically simpler is more reliable in my opinion.

Thanks for the details. Sounds like a good strategy that I will definitely give a shot next time around.

Looks like the Tundra has some competition. Will be interesting to see the MPG estimates.

Looks like a common trend for these next generation design styles. They all seem to be honing in on sharper/bolder edges on the vehicle and moving away from rounded styling. The current gen 4Runners and Tundra redesign both share the sharper lines design so I am guessing the next Tacoma will share some of that also. I don't think it's a bad thing either because to me it makes the vehicle look more aggressive.

yeah all the tech stuff is just more stuff to mess up IMHO. yeah it’s nice but how long will it all last and work like it should without any problems? Alot of the cars and trucks now come with a lot of stuff i could do without and would rather not have. all this stuff going on cars to hit the brakes for you and stuff is just BS imho and is going to make people relie on the car to do it and not do it them self. i wish they would up a switch to turn off abs and trac stuff on trucks. i say trucks because that stuff really makes stopping worse in snow and off road. dry or in the rain i think is dose help with controlling stopping.
I agree seams like back in the day(like 80’s and early 90’s) suvs and trucks where not so rounded off and than they stared making all the edges more rounded and now they going back. I like it a lot, now if they would only start working on making the bumpers and grills a little smaller.

I really like the look of the new F-150. It's a different style of truck from a Taco though. I didn't get a taco to pull 10,000 lbs trailers and mall crawl.

This I purchased my truck in Arkansas and drove it back to Texas. Paid the taxes in my state. Could of paid it in either state.

    I don't want that. It's too big. That's why I bought a Tacoma, it's mid sized.

You are way off... 5,900 pounds is the heaviest '14.

    My '11 Ram 2500 4x4 CTD weighs over 7000 pounds though :D
