Sorry guys or gals, I didn't want to have to go find a forum for the RAV4 to ask this question.

My niece has a 2020 RAV4 (not the hybrid model). Today I changed out the rear brakes and rotors for her. I followed the instructions to put the EPS in service mode and proceeded. Both calipers were still fully out when I did the change. I ended up hooking up a small battery with some wires to the connections and winding the motors back that way (they only wound back a bit). The pistons were still a bit hard to retract due to some rust there but I was able to softly push them back with my pad retracting tool.

Everything went together perfectly but after attempting to take the system out of service mode and back to regular mode, I have a parking brake malfunction error. I retried the service mode several times, releasing it back to regular mode a few times but still the malfunction on the dash. I can hear the motors back there winding in and out but cannot get rid of the error on the dash.

I put the code reader on but no codes listed. I'm guessing my reader doesn't have all the needed functions.

I did order up another reader that handles this EPS reset function but am wondering if just a simple code removal is all that's wrong or if I somehow f*cked something up on those motors.

Anyone have any thoughts or ideas to try? Those motors are $600 each so I'm praying it's just a simple code removals from the system. I'm hoping when I did the service mode retract that I did the retract instead of pushing them all the way forward.

My daughter also has same year RAV4. I recently did rear brakes and retracted the motors using the EPB maintenance mode method.

Another option, that I did on sister’s NX200t, is to take apart the electric motors. It has two allen bolts in the back, then use a torx bit to retract the bolt pushing the piston.

And, one last, pricier, option is to get an EPB compatible code reader. I recommend the Ancel TD700 because you can also use it to read ATF temps in the RAV4 and our Tacomas, as well as Lexus models, up to 2021.

When I did the NX200t brakes, I also got an error code, but it only showed on the code scanner, nothing lit up on the instrument panel. Maybe your new code scanner will clear it.

You need a scan tool that can talk to the Skid Control ECU (ABS Module) and see what code(s) you have, a generic code reader won't.

Service mode does not retract the piston, it retracts the parking brake mechanism so the piston can be pushed in (some have to be turned at the same time).

You shouldn't have needed to do anything to the caliper once in service mode other than push in the piston.

Once you finish you pump the brakes a few times and then exit service mode, at this point it run the parking brake mechanism and calibrates it.

Unfortunately I've had several vehicles come into the shop that had the calipers messed up from not following the proper procedure, hopefully that isn't the case here.
