I have been in my new '23 Tacoma for about two months now. Yesterday, I noticed a new, fairly loud humming sound coming from my dash. Cycling the power for the headunit makes the noise temporarily disappear (see the attached video, albeit the recording makes the sound less apparent). I am fairly confident that I would have noticed this before, but maybe I have just been missing it.

Is this normal? Or do ya'll think my headunit is running hotter than normal (p.s., the temps in my part of the world are ~freezing this time of year). Thanks!

I can definitely hear it and mine doesn’t do that, but my 2019 w less tech probably isn’t a good comparison either.
Maybe there’s an update the dealer can do, that prevents apps from running or something that’s making it work so hard it needs cooling w normal use, especially in cold temps, I’d wonder if it’ll cook itself when it’s hot out.

while I can’t hear the best, I can hear high pitched sounds, and they drive me nuts. My work laptop did this for years, I had to prop it up on something, and eventually get a longer docking station cable to get it further away from me. My IT guy tried all kinds of updates and found that model had problems with overheating.

@Chew, thanks so much for the response! I am glad you too were able to pick up on the described sound in the video. We have had some warmer days as the season tends towards spring... nevertheless, the fan noise does not seem to be correlated with the outside temperature. I wonder what is triggering the fan? I can't seem to connect the fan noise trigger to an event, except that maybe it shows up when I turn off the truck, and shortly thereafter, restarting (e.g., at a gas station).

Anybody else encounter (or not) this issue?

If you pulled the head unit, you'd see the exhaust port in the back of the chassis for the internal cooling fan (and you'd also see it's made by Pioneer). It runs constantly when the unit is on but isn't audible unless the volume is down in a quiet environment (e.g. garage w/engine off). Totally normal.

@Homiec thanks for the response! :) The concern here is that the fan is *usually* operating at a very low speed, and is nearly inaudible; however, the "sporadic" behavior I describe involves the fan randomly kicking it into high gear and making a loud whine. I cannot connect the fast fan speed to any event (e.g., high temperatures, longer uses, etc.).

Hmm.. I have a 23 and haven't heard the fan. I'm going to take a silent drive to work this morning and let you know if mine is similar lol

Well, mine is noticeable when at a stop with the fans off. It seems like yours is a bit louder though.
Hopefully others can also chime in.
