I only run cruise on fairly flat ground....SR5 double cab 3.5L auto trans stone stock no mods.....6,000 miles every tank calculated in excel has been right at 21 MPG. That is zero "freeway or turnpike" driving, rural country roads.

This last full tank, we achieved 19.4mpg in mostly commuter driving with very little 4WD or idle time. That seems OK to me, given the terrain and roads we drive. We will road trip to NC soon, so I'll have some extensive highway driving, but not much of it will be flat/straight. Hope to see what is the best we can get in 65mph cruise mode.

I commute mixed city and highway and got 23mpg on my drive this morning. Granted this is with stock tires on my 16 inch wheels with an intake and exhaust going 80-85 almost the whole way.

Well while my truck was in the shop for two months I got to drive a TRD Sport 4x4 and a TRD Off-road 4x4. The Sport got me 18.5 while the Off-road got me 17.4. mileage logged in my feully profile. I took them both off-roading a few times. Both are double cabs like my 4banger. My truck averages around 19.5 which is not four wheel. So I would say, compared to my truck, they both do pretty well. The only truck that beats it mpg wise in it's category is the Ridgeline. If you go to fuelly the Colorado isn't doing that well. But....the F150 4x4 2.7l Ecoboost is averaging in the high 18's. These small trucks need to step it up.

Just depends on your driving habits, terrain and what all is installed on your truck.

I used to get a solid 20MPG but with my lift, 33" tires, steel bumpers, and steel skid plate, I am down to a solid 16 myself and i'm ok with that because I love the truck and I understand that I'm the one who lowered the MPG. Not the trucks fault. It does what I want it to and gets me where I need to go. If I was really concerned with fuel mileage I would have bought a Prius.

I was averaging 18-20 MPG with stock wheels

Now I have Ridge Grapplers and I average 15-18 MPG.

It think if manufacturers can get better gas mileage or equal in a large truck, a midsize should be able to do several mpgs better. So Toyota is going to have to start looking at Diesel if they don't want to go the route Ford is....or something.

But it isn't like the Colorado is torching the Tacoma MPG. If the Ranger doesn't either then why bother? The 3.5l is ~30cu in smaller than the 4.0l. How much better than the 4.0l was expected?

Edit: I suppose you could put the Frontier in this group too, and the Ridgeline doesn't count.

Toyota has diesels !!! They have very good diesels.
But to get back the the OP..and many more. If your going to put larger much heavier tire's on your truck, your going to get less MPG. Same with heavy bumpers, rock rails , skid plates, winch, steel bed racks, Rtt's . Plus depends on how you drive. Bottom line is its a truck.
Or be like my wife...aside from exotics, Tesla S million miles per lol or RAV4 AWD hybrid 37mpg . I personally like my trucks :)

Edit note : I like driving the Tesla a lot, even tho I tell her otherwise :). And watching the MPG' s on the RAV was fun....once !!

And pop out the tether clip then relocate it to one of the other holes in the door. Done.

Colorado does kick the Taco's butt at MPGs, but it also has to look like a minivan to do it so...
