Im new in the Tacoma world. I just bought my 2014 Tacoma 30K. Im finding out the v6 is Direct injected. Is this true? Also has anyone had any problem with it due to build up on the back of valves?

No, the Tacoma is not a direct injected engine.

Direct injection started in 2016, it uses 12 fuel injectors, 6 port injectors and 6 GDI, done some research, Toyota first used this on the Scion FRS (Subby motor).

    Here's how it works.

USA only uses the 2TR-FE and the 1GR-FE for the Second Generation Tacoma. Both of these engines are port injected. Note: this is a second generation forum is why everyone said no direct injection.

The Third Generation uses the 2TR-FE with port injection and the Direct Injected 2GR-FKS Engine. This has only been used in the Tacoma since the 2016 model year until present.

So you are partially correct. New Tacoma after 2016 you can get a port injected 4 cylinder or a direct injected 6 cylinder. Anything earlier is only port injected.

Your 2014 that you own is Port Fuel Injected engine. Do not worry about carbon on the valves etc...

That video is a bit confusing. Either those motors work different than a normal 4 stroke, or the video is wrong. It shows the exhaust valve opening on the power stroke, instead of the exhaust stroke. It’s showing closer to a 2 stroke.

I saw that too. I think it is wrong. If the exhaust opened during the power stroke there would be a massive loss of power to the drive train.

If the words don't get you satisfied, OP, look at the pictures or schematics.

    Injectors into lower intake plenum.

Lower intake plenum bolts onto the heads.

Exactly. A large amount of the power would be lost from the ignited mixture escaping through the exhaust port. It would be like a motor with bad compression.

That is how the pseudo Atkinson cycle BS sorta works on the 2GR-FKS but yeah for the purposes of this diagram it's just bad haha

Both port and direct are good systems, both have their strengths which is why the new toyota engines use both in tandem

Old thread I know but the video is not wrong, there is a period in valve timing known as blow down, the exhaust opens at the end of the power stroke to ensure there is no pressure left in the cylinder at the beginning of the exhaust stroke,if the exhaust valve opened after the power stroke it would take power to push the exhaust out,the higher rpm the engine is designed to run at the earlier the exhaust valve opens

Then why is there a spark and ignition every time the cylinder reaches top dead center?

I think it’s just a shitty animation,it doesn’t even show a spark animation just the two injectors, the timing of the whole animation seems off,I was more speaking to the fact that exhaust valves do open on the power stroke
