The other day I was on a muddy construction site and switched my new taco into 4WD. When I was leaving the site I forgot to switch out and as I was slowly turning out back onto the pavement I felt the transfer case bind up, so I stopped mid turn to switch back to RWD, but as I completed the turn I heard a pretty loud popping sound from the transfer case. I'm guessing that pop was just the driveline releasing the tension from being bound up, but I'm a little worried I might have done a little damage. I don't see anything leaking underneath, and the truck still reengages and disengages 4WD, but is it possible that there is still some unseen damage? I know I'm being a little paranoid, but something had to give in the driveline in order for it to release. Can anyone answer what mechanically occurs when the driveline pops after being bound, because 4WD was engaged while making a turn on dry pavement?

I lost track thousands of dollars ago.
You should be okay it will do that if there is a load on the drive shafts.

Happened to me too by accident. Forgot I had the wheel turned while engaging back to H2. Reversed a little bit and straightened the wheel and that pop sound occurred. I was paranoid as well but it seems ok. I didn't have anything loaded in the bed. My 4wd seems to be fine after using it a few times after that. Gonna let the Dealer do an inspection when it goes in for service at 5k.

Exactly. I'm wondering what part of the drivetrain gives and makes that pop...
