81* here and sunny. Just did some testing and with the side windows open on my topper and the inside of the crate was 106* (sensor top right side in crate) even with tailgate down and lid open.

    106 start.jpg

With back end shut and fan on dropped to 99-100

    100 fan.jpg

Holy crap even with frozen water bottles not so sure this will work.

Vehicle restraint system I have is going to be border line in size for the dog I'm picking up. Time to order the next size up from Amazon Prime.

Plan, test, and then have a backup system in place for when it falls apart.

I'd go for the seatbelt idea and keep him in the cab

Well the cooling part is headed in the right direction. Since my shell is not a huge financial obligation, I'm thinking about playing with vents. It's not a huge scientific breakthrough knowing that heat rises, but it would be pretty nice to know how much venting (without killing the roof) is going to work and be acceptable.

Yeah seat belt harness is the plan now but not giving up totally. At times I wish had a double cab long bed but trying to K turn that on those logging roads is a real PITA. Never a free lunch. Crate is just a little too big for the front seat.

Yes Windoors with sliders. Lot of people have complained about the sliding windows being so small on the Windoors and lack of ventilation. And water entry in the rain. But after having the lifting Windoors hard to go back without them like many others feel. Some said having Windoors on one side and the traditional bank of windows on the other is the way to go. Too late now.

Top battery operated vent like on some campers would be the best option for cooling and my first thought. But that creates a whole other set of issues. Only gets this hot 3-4 months of the year here. Or does it? I had no idea it increased heat inside the bed that much. Great in the winter camping though.

Yes, and part of the study is going to also involve how far into spring and fall the temps are acceptable. Summer is definitely out and winter is the least of my worries. But having said that, I still wouldn't keep a dog in the back any longer than needed during the cooler temps here.

I'm thinking solar powered vent fans as well as placement. With a fan blowing inside the bed from one end it would make sense to put the roof vent on the other end. So if the vent were toward the tailgate end it seems it would probably help mitigate any carbon monoxide that could possibly leak in.

Damn that is too easy.... Perfect! I ran elephant trunks all over the engine room for 20 years from supply ducts to where I was working to try and keep from having another heat stroke. That going into intake of the fan plus frozen water bottles should work. At least have more than one plan in case the seat belt harness doesn't fit, etc. Thanks Mike time to go take a look and measure.
