83 ft/lbs

The other number thrown around is 76 ft-lb, seen on the Toyota wheel lock packaging and in the 4Runner owner's manual. Feel free to speculate why.

 

I under torque every damn wheel key. I hate them and I hate people that over torque them.

You'll never have an issue removing one I installed.

They come on all our PDI's in my region. It's awful.

 

Seems like every damn Honda and Toyota vehicle produced between 1998 and 2018 with alloys had to have them for some reason

 

If they do, they probably haven't been punched in the face yet.

You know what is even crazier?
The fact that I DID read my manual.
And it says 85 ft/lbs. Not 83.......

I wonder if the people that have responded actually read the manual that came with their truck?
Or they read a manual other than the one that came with their truck?

 

My truck didn't come with them.
If it did, I take them off and throw them right in the trash.
I'm not swapping sockets to install lug nuts. They can all be the same.
A 21mm works just fine. I don't need a special "key". No thanks.

My friend de-beaded a tire on the trail, nearly an hours drive from town. He didn't have the "key" for his lugs, and temps were well below zero Fahrenheit - starting fluid would not burn hot/ fast enough to reseat it. It was a long night. We drove my truck to harbor freight and bought the "every lug key" set. Lessons were learned that night.

 

83 ft lbs sounds about right for lug nuts.

It’s ok. I’m a bit strange too.
I like it that way. It keeps the “normal” people away.
Those normal people are just plain weird.

 

If he doesn't carry a "key" i.e. socket that fits his lugs, he could save even more weight by looking for a lake and then throwing his spare wheel and jack into it.

 

He could also buy real bead lockers and not those imitation ones that are on it now.
Then it wouldn’t break the bead.

Not hating on the wheels. But it’s definitely one of those “ironic” moment when you are sitting there with a blown bead, and “fake” bead lockers.

 

Two days ago, when I search for classic jet fighter planes, search engine AI summary gave me 50 percent hits with ICE propeller-driven aircraft. A different search engine did not. Shit you, I do not.
AI stands for Absolutely Idiotic. Shit in begats shit out. It is no substitute for biological gray matter and and education that includes critical thinking.

 

Pretty much been my experience too. You have ask a lot of “follow up” questions to get “close” to the results you are looking for. In which case, I could have just done all the “work” myself.

Or maybe I just don’t know how to operate “AI search”.
Either way, I don’t feel confident enough to rely on it..

This isn't abut formatting. There's zero context to the thread as it's presented in the title and the first post.
It forces the rest of us to either guess or ask questions in order to determine what is being asked.

You're right, maybe not the trucks but a hell of a lot of cars came with them.

Nothing more annoying than an old Honda Accord driven by a granny, curb rash on the wheels, off-brand cheapie tires, body covered with dents and moss .. but by god her wheels aren't going anywhere..
I'm digging around in the trunk and glove box looking for a wheel lock key that literally no one cares about except the finance manager at some dealership who gets an extra $20 commission off the "upgrade"

1% of the time they'll prevent theft. The other 99% of the time it's just an obstacle for some poor tech trying to get a brake job done so he can go home

 

I'll agree that many dealers install wheels locks during the PDI as a courtesy. The torn-open McGard package with the four spare lug nuts and key is tossed in the console or glove box.
