Heard a crack and crash. Came out to find this big branch inches from the back of my PreRunner. The same tree dropped a limb that hit our Sienna earlier this year. The tree's days are numbered now.

I say :sawzall: that tree. Before it’s too late.

    Hopefully!

Though he would have to check with local regulations to see what the process is; I have a ton of trees at one house and technically I can't just cut one down if I wanted to.

Something about having it valued, and going through County to 'properly' get it cut or removed. Was some years ago but basically it would've been a huge hassle; the fines would've been worse if I had just cut it down without checking first.

I don’t know where you live, but me and your county officials wouldn’t get along.
I’d have them sign something saying they are responsible if any damages occurred during the “value” process.

Actually, I would have been fined.
Because I have never heard of such regulations.
I tend to take care of my problems, I don’t typically ask other people if I can “fix my own problem”

Must've just been a county thing.

It was in Salinas, Monterey County, California.

Something about trees adding property value or something so they need to be evaluated/assessed before removal of any sort.

Like I said, it's been awhile and I haven't lived in that house for several years. It's a rental now.

I've heard of a number of local rules about that stuff. California and Colorado have some of the most strict about tree cutting from what I've read. I had a previous HOA that wouldn't allow it unless you replaced with a tree of similar size and value. That drove me insane, I had a 30 foot builder's grade trash tree that dropped little spikey balls, and I desperately wanted to replace it with a live oak. But HOA said no.

My current property? No regs. Which is great because my lot is 0.23 acres, and what the house isn't occupying, 9 major trees are. So yeah, 2 of them had to go. The arborist wanted to cull 3 more, but I disagreed.

    Yeah that's gotta go.

Check with town hall..I had a couple of dead trees in my front yard and because they were within a certain distance to the street, the town cut them down free of charge.

So I just posted my experience to bring awareness; hopefully the OP doesn't have to deal with such stuff.

But in my case it wasn't an HOA thing, it was County.

I am glad you posted it.
I never would have thought to check.

If I ever move, that’s something I’d potentially need to check.

Cut it down now and ask questions later. The HOA fine will be cheaper than replacing taco.

Come ride with me and listen to the radio sometime; you'll see nobody in Salinas cares about a dude properly using a chainsaw with the stabbings, meth, domestic battery incidents and other violent crime in the city.

I guarantee if you shop at Boot Barn and wear a helmet and chaps no Deputy nor anyone from Public Works would bug you.

Just say OUT of the park boundaries with your saw of doom and you won't be wanted for the Crime of the Century.

ETA: That would go great in my BBQ if you're not going to use it.

Close indeed. The trusty Husky would be howling if that was my tree too. Even if it’s just a pruning.

Eff that, cut it down, you have evidence of it being a safety hazard that alone is enough and they wouldnt ever try to take you to court or fine you on those grounds.

With evidence it shouldn't be an issue with the county. You already have a photograph and the other car that was damaged before from this same tree. We have laws here which also restricts tree cutting over a certain size. I took pictures of the tree roots encroaching on my foundation and presented them with the request and it was approved in one day. Cut that big old oak down. Fines can run into the thousands and then the tree replacement cost.... $$$$$

Don't cut it without knowledge of what you are getting into as far as a fine and replacement cost.
