AGM battery help

Why AGM? What's wrong with a redular lead acid battery?.

 

Nothing, but I’d rather you tell me what’s good or bad about an AGM battery. That’d be more useful.

My 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee came with a AGM battery. The battery is under the passenger seat floor board. The battery lasts about 3 years in AZ. Jeep has stated for safety reason an AGM battery should always be used.

I put a AGM battery in a 2009 Dodge Ram in 2014. It was still going strong when I sold the Ram. No changes to the alternator output.

I am considering putting an AGM battery in a Nissan Frontier. Frontier has a known issue of corrosion of battery cables due to battery gas venting onto them.

My take is the manufacture of AGM batteries know what the vehicle alternator puts out. They sell AGM batteries as a replacement to the OEM battery. They warrant the AGM battery. The charging question is a nothing issue as far as I am concerned.

 

Well, they're more exspensive, and as you said in your original post, "I read about charging particulars... this and that... now I'm confused. Something about the alt not keeping up with the battery needs."

The truck was built with the intent of using a lead acid battery. They work just fine.

 

Good feedback. Thanks for that. I was also thinking the same thing: selling a battery to the masses that may be problematic. Costco sells one, and you know how play-it-safe they are with their name.

Looks like I got my heat answer - sort of. No real comment on one being more tolerant than the other. 120° in the engine compartment is probably a reality more often than not in AZ.
@E.J. posted earlier that our alternator output is 13.9V and this article seems to indicate 14.4V might be too high in my climate. 13.9V would be 2.32V/cell which is a tick above their guidance. So maybe it's all good?

The general consensus is that it's fine. The alternator will charge it more than enough to start the truck but a lot of us will occasionally throw an AGM battery charger on to keep things optimal.

As far as I can tell, Group 31 AGM is risky and really doesn't offer any strong offsetting benefit over a group 27F. I don't see any reported issues with group 27F. If there are any issues with a Northstar or Odyssey group 27F AGM, please let me know because I'm going to make a move in the spring when the post-winter sales start.

 

I run a 94r AGM on my other Toyota that also had a 27f stock. Kinda a tweener size/option among the 27f lead acid and 27f AGMs as far as specs and price. It’s a shorter battery too so might require a shorter battery hook to secure in some applications.


Main reason I went agm this round is because I’m tired of the corrosive off-gassing of the lead acids ive had. I had a nice battery hold down that got chewed up after a few months when I put a brand new 27f in. Sure it’s probably a symptom of either over-undercharging or whatever based on my commute or something but I just rather avoid it entirely. Water level always seemed fine.

Just out of curiosity i looked on O'Reilly at 24F batteries for our trucks. A Super Start Extreme weighs 43.7 Lbs and a Super Start Platinum AGM was 44.5, doubt the truck would notice a few ounces difference.

 

I think all the ones I’ve seen that have broke, used the dual battery kits that shove 2 batteries side by side in the factory location.

I’m running a 67lb 27f and mine is fine.

 

been running it for a while hitting dirt roads and woops over 50mph. No issues

 

My four month old w/ 6600 miles is already leaking out of the vent caps with only a single 900 mile Baja round trip. I’m going back to agm not a red top i think i’ll look at Vato Zone and try theirs. My wifes Camry battery is getting old so i use hers for the core charge and the Taco battery in hers.

 

I am curious about the Lithium batteries also. Anyone on here ever try one?
I think they are pretty expensive.

 

I recall some talk about the Antigravity brand batteries but not sure who owns one. They are about $800. I’ve only seen them in performance cars (e.g Ferrari) and cars built for racing due to how light they are.

 

Well faaahhk... today, what I think is one of the idler pulleys started squealing like mad above ~1500rpm. The ol bar of soap on the belt trick didn't stop it sooo, yeah. 39K miles seems a little early to me... so now it's a battery AND more.
