Haha really? I was there for less than ten minutes. We opted out of watching Jurassic park 3D to head back to Seward early.

Here's some BS. Just switched insurance companies. Apparently two speeding tickets jack your rate up over a hundred a month

Just got done with SR-22. My wife and I make a habit of driving at similar speeds. The difference is she has made a habit out of getting caught :D

I lucked out with insurance. I got in a small fender bender last spring but because the car I hit was an 85 corolla station wagon that was more rust than sheet metal, the insurance company totaled her car. The lucky part was it was only valued at $500 and any accident with less than $500 in damage has no affect on our insurance. Learned my lesson tho! Would've been a hit and run if girdwood wasn't such a small town too since I didn't even know the accident happened

Random question for you guys.....My little brother, the youngest of 5, is moving to Fairbanks in 3 weeks to join the Wildland Fire Fighter crew and I'm trying to get him a going away present/graduation present before he leaves. Can anyone suggest something that he will need and he's overlooked? He's a SoCal boy moving to Alaska so I'm sure he doesn't have everything he will need.

Hmm.. Anything gear related is a good bet. Rain jacket, rain pants, good quality lightweight clothing, nice set of hiking boots, maybe a daypack for hikes and stuff?

Fairbanks gets exceptionally hot in the summer time too. Pack accordingly. Is he here long term?

It seems like he has most "equipment" type things covered for the job, so its hard for me to think of anything else. Might try to find him a big ass knife or something. He'll be there i think 8 months for sure, then find out if he's staying for good. The WFF crews are mostly seasonal.

I love my k bar, used it to cut helipads out of the forest west of Fairbanks a couple summers ago.

to the guy looking for stuff, if your bro is still in highschool, i dont know if he knows what he is getting into with wildland, give him a treadmill and a workout routine before he comes up, these guys up here are crazy, haha, but i would recommend a good hatchet, like the little Gerber one, also, a leatherman, i would recommend a wave, or something along those lines, also, not a bad call is a water purifier, and a bottle to go with it, i like the Katadyn filters with the nelgene bottles that go with them.

Leatherman Wave is my favorite one. Good call on that. Gerber hatchets are nice too, but I'm always worried about the composite handle breaking. A good headlamp is always a must for me up here too, but it really isn't needed in the summer.
