If the slope of the water line is to steep to get the pipe level when entering the basement, would it be a good idea to throw a pair of 45 degree elbows along with a short section of pipe to essentially raise the pipe?

Interesting discussion on the water main replacement as I have somewhat of a similar situation. I plan to cut back the galv as far as I can without digging and connect some 3/4" copper through a dielectric union.

I do have another question for you plumbers. How common is it for a toilet to have a bad casting? I have installed a new toilet twice now, once with a normal thickness wax and rubber seal and once with a jumbo wax and rubber seal. Both times it seems I have a small leak because I notice my grout lines are just a little wet near the toilet. When I took the toilet up to reset it the area around the flange did not look very wet, but there was some brown spongey mold looking stuff growing underneath the toilet. The water level in the bowl does go down a little after its done filling and I can hear a bit of a gurgle as well. Just wondering if I should pull it and swap it out...

 

So I got with the local plumbing inspector, he was very helpful. But now I seem to have even more questions....First off he said it would be fine for me to do the work myself.

He suggested polyethylene tubing, not pex as opposed to copper.

He suggested I step my pipe size up to 1" since I'll have two bathrooms.

He said there should not be any joints in the tubing, I wasn't aware that I should be looking at a continuous piece of soft copper for the main?

 

use copper for the supply.

plastic pipe is for drains and bongs.

Is soft rolled copper typical in this application?

Is type M suitable? not sure how easy I could find K

Is 3/4" big enough? I have 700 sq. ft house with full basement.
Will have at least 1 1/2 baths. I'm thinking it will be plenty....

 

yes...soft M under my slab on my new build...done it a hundred times. sleeved, and w/o any joints, of course.

3/4" is fine IMO.

I have 3/4" supply coming into the home...run to the WH, 1/2" supplies run to all fixtures throughout.

pex is fine as well.....but the fittings are brass...and i am not fimular with costs......
type m is for heating.......type L is fine for potable.......

I'll need to talk with my local plumbing inspector again to get some clarifications. He said to use plastic pipe over copper. He specifically said no PEX. Anyway I'm going with copper, the thicker the better. A strange thing he said was to have no buried joints, this is what got me guessing at rolled copper. Not sure where I would get a continuous piece of rigid copper 40' long........

 

The only place i think you would find 40' of rolled copper is a plumbing supply house

 

Type M is softer than L or K.

I would suggest stopping at a plumbing supply house. We have TONS of damaged copped tubing. We'd sell you 3', 4', 8' happily. 20' lengths get damaged all the time in the warehouse. They get cut down to 10' and put back into stock. The damaged piece gets the damage cut out. The damaged part goes to the scrap yard, the straight length goes in the corner for guys like you.

 

The inspector mentioned I shouldn't have any joints underground, which made me think I would have to use "rolled" copper or find a continuous piece of rigid 40 + feet long.....lol

I'll get with the inspector for some clarification.

At this point I'm looking at a 60' roll of 3/4" copper (type K).

No, It's not. At all.

Granted, I'm not in your market, but if you walked in off the street today we would charge you $273.45. High volume contractors would pay $239. Our cost today as a wholesaler is under $200. They're robbing you. Like I said, I'm in NJ and it's a different economy/market, but hopefully you can use that info to your benefit. That sounds like a very high price.

Ok last time ' copper for your main. From curb to house no joints....mk comes in rolls of 60 or 90 feet only......
And type m is not softer

 

Type m is thin wall tube used for heating......

 

Is that the same as is used for propane ?
