I’ve been considering throwing a cap on my truck, and decided that maybe a tonneau cover with a bed rack might work as it’s significantly cheaper.
It seems though that they’re primarily used for rtt’s, which I’m probably not interested in.

Anyone use em for anything other then tents?

Assuming you're speaking about a less than cab high rack.
Can use them for a platform or cargo tray and then get a cargo bag or shell box to carry extra gear? Hauling long lumber strapped to the bars and then through the back window? Bikes?

Buy what fits your needs. The secondary market is your friend. I had a Roll-n-lock cover which was great until our second daughter arrived. Now we have a camper shell I got used for like $400. We love it. Can't imagine the truck without it. If you hunt you'll find what you're looking for.
