Bellhousing Identification Trouble

I really have no way to know if the Transmission in the2000 was swapped with an older one.

 

You're 100% sure that your slave is on the right? I can't imagine someone swapping in an older trans with the wrong bellhousing and rerouting the hydraulic lines so that the slave could be moves to the passenger side.

 

I have seen strange things over the years .

Besides pretty easy to run a new line.

Sometimes free parts one does what one can.

Maybe a rebuilt transmission just one of those quirks of fate

 

@Gen1andDone shoot sorry you are correct I was looking at it upside down.

Here's a better comparison. It is the slave that is on the passenger side on the one I received vs. the drivers side on my truck.

 

@Bivouac looks like the lengths are different so its a no go, if I wanted to re-route the slave.
6 1/4" (bellhousing I received)
7 1/2" (Bellhousing on my truck)

Haha, I wasn't going to say anything out embarrassment but since you posted that I can see that I'm not alone. I also had rigged mine after discovering the break, not as elaborate as yours though. I simply gave the clutch fork some upward support using a small bungee cord. Mind you, this Tacoma isn't my only vehicle, but it went from having to force it into gears, or from a stop, having to shut the truck off to get it in gear, to now being able to actually shift through the gears without much fuss. Maybe I'll post a photo in your thread sometime.

 

Oh dang a bungee cord actually makes a lot of sense, I like it! I figured if you own an old vehicle you gotta get a little creative sometimes.

i ended up using the starter motor to get me going in 1st (i couldn't shift out of 1st) and basically drove in 1st gear back home (luckily only three blocks away from when it snapped).


i just got back the truck yesterday after all the parts went in.. the only thing i could think of that caused it was (maybe?) a heavy duty pressure plate from the previous owner put alot of stress on the back of the pivot, and it started the bend backwards, untit it just sheared off. i took the opportunity to change out the clutch (aisin OE replacement) and new clutch fork and new master + slave cylinders and the truck drives like a totally different vehicle now. its super easy to get into 1st gear from a stop, and drives better.. so much so, that i might actually attempt to teach the wife to drive it since the pedal now feels so much lighter. (this is my first truck, i always thought truck clutches were very stiff, so i didnt think anything of the stiffer pedal before) but now that i think about the way the clutch / fork assembly and the way the fulcrum point could have been damaged it makes sense it would be harder to push in since the leverage is off.

i hope the OP figures out the correct bell housing part number...

Hey everyone, well good news to report I finally got the right bell housing in my hands and got the job done! Thanks again for the help here.

Pretty much the same crack pattern as other posters.


@chebosto I went in and did the clutch and cylinders too, so much lighter. Interesting theory about the heavy duty pressure plate. Got me thinking about what caused mine..

Only thing that stuck out was I bought the truck without a rubber boot on the clutch fork. There was almost no grease under the fork pivot when I took it apart, so maybe dirt and debris got in there and just added unnecessary friction to that pivot. Over time causing cracks in the casting.

BUT at the same time my truck has 290k miles on the odo, so it could be anything.

 

Congrats on getting back on the road! It's been a ~ month for me now, still getting used to the driving feel since i only drive a few miles to/from work. Cheers and hoping for another 290kmi+ for you!
