Did a search and came up with nothing. Other than speculation videos on YouTube. Does anyone know exactly what this is for? Pen holder... wheel key... toothpick keeper? Etc?.....

I tried a 10 mm socket... Thought just maybe Toyota was thinking of a keeper.
    No luck.

Why? And only for the 16's? If so, why does my 2020 have it?

2016’s have a separate tailgate key. That changed in 2017 when some engineer realized they could just use the key fob key to unlock it.

Also, it holds a pen as well. That’s why it’s still there.

So I have a separate question aside from this because of touches on a subject I've been curious about: I bought my 2016 Tacoma used a few months ago from an independent (non-Toyota) dealership. My truck has the push button start option with the metal key in the fob. I've really never had a need to lock the tailgate because I didn't have a cover on. However, I recently purchased a cover and noticed the key did not lock the gate. As such, I've been reading a couple of different posts here suggesting a 2nd key is needed for the 16 tailgates. Does anyone know if a VIN at the dealership can get a new key cut? Thanks in advance!

does the key in your fob also work to lock and unlock it? If so; it’s not technically a separate key, it’s just a spare. ;)

just a tip: leaving the tailgate unlocked makes it very easy to disconnect and steal the tailgate. there are brackets you can add to the tailgate hinge to prevent that but
if you have not done that, tailgate theft is a real and common thing. you can sometimes buy it back on craigslist :) keeping it locked always is the safest.
