went off-loading through really hi grass, brush, and was a little hilly, I was in 4 wheel drive and going in reverse and smelled a burning odor from my truck, not in the engine but kind of the transmission.

I smelled this when I was going in reverse 4x4, this is the first time I used reverse in 4x4 and I was driving about 5-8mph uphill.

    I have a 2013 SBDC Off-road, 4x4 manual.

    is this normal?

    Thanks

Could it have been grass burning from contact with the exhaust?

My stepfather scared himself badly that way with a new Silverado 2500. Fortunately he didn't set the field on fire.

lol, yes the cats can very much burn grass. I did it with my old pickup.
    "oh shiser whats that smell?"
"oh shiser the underside of my truck is burning"

that was the first time I set that truck on fire lol. another possibility would be spilt oil on the exhaust manifold. I am excellent at that too

Did you slip the clutch at all getting started uphill? It doesn't take much on the 6speeds to get the clutch hot. The reverse gear is too fast, and the clutches don't seem to be very tolerant of slippage. I haven't burned mine up, but it does smell with a bit of slippage.

Did it smell like burning rubber ?

I had that happen to my truck and discovered there was excess grease from the u joint at the tranny spraying onto the exhaust

yes it did smell like burning rubber. I put it in 2H and drove it home, the smell was less pungent but there was also a lot of foliage under my truck.
