I will gladly take a few less HP for drastically better reliability.

Haha wtf? No I don’t. I’m thankful my truck has plenty of power whenever I need, city, highway or off-road.

The reason I said that I passed 2nd gens like they standing still, because of the previous comment that 2nd gens are quicker, which is completely not true. Couple dudes didn’t want to let me pass them and I just laughed. He did his best not to let me, but unfortunately 1GR fe is out of breath at 4500k rpms. I guess they read all this BS at Tacoma world and think that I don’t have a chance. Funny guys they are.

The acceleration difference is so marginal that a heads up race would almost be dead even.

Yeah I dunno. So many dudes actually hate on 3rd gens, it’s pretty funny. Even though facts are facts.

The 3rd gen tacoma would be a home run if it had the 4.0 out of the 4runner in it and a decent shifting trans.

1/4 miles times are .2 seconds apart. Not sure how you claim your race truck is drastically faster lol.

Honestly my favorite part of this forum are the physicists that bolt on 1000 pounds worth of skids and bumpers and add a good 50% of additional unsprung mass, then get on here and complain about how gutless the Tacoma is.

Happiest day of my life was selling my 3rd gen Tacoma. I want a 1st or 2nd gen now.

Nice try, but i experienced this in real life driving. I run circles around 2nd gens. Anywhere, anytime.

To me it's always been about the bore and stroke.

Traditionally, "truck" engines are long-stroke designs where the bore is either equal ("square") to or greater ("oversquare") than the stroke It's an easy way to set the engine up to make a lot of low RPM torque at the expense of not wanting to rev out due to the long stroke (mechanical limitations).

Car engines, especially sporty small engines like Hondas and Ferraris are usually square or undersquare designs (stroke is shorter than the bore). These generally like to rev better than long stroke designs.

Many classic sporty JDM 2-liter engines use an 86mm x 86mm bore and stroke, or oversquare where the bore is larger than the stroke. These usually need to rev to make power.

For example, the Honda S2000 originally had a 2-liter with 87mm bore x 84mm stroke. The refresh kept the same bore but stretched the stroke to 90.7mm, bumping the displacement to 2.2L and adding some torque ... but the redline dropped from 8900 to 8200.

A lot of these "classic" characteristics have been mitigated by variable valve and cam timing, but in general it still kind of trends to follow. Some of the trucky engines like the 2TR are square but have a torquey tune, like an RV cam on a domestic V8, that has them torquey down low at the expense of high RPM performance and a low redline.

    2TR-FE
    95mm bore x 95mm stroke

    2GR-FKS
    94mm bore x 83mm stroke

    GM 4.2L DOHC straight-6 (Trailblazer)
    93mm bore x 101mm stroke

    GM 8.1-liter
    107.9mm bore x 111mm stroke

40 hp when you rev it like a civic which is not good in a truck. Plus the 3rd gen I think isa few hundred pounds heavier
