Cardboard Boat Project

I think that was with frozen newspaper unless there's another.

 

That might be the one im thinking of.... but soaking the cardboard and freezing it could still be a good strategy if its allowed.

 

It wouldn't last long in Fl. unless you use some liquid nitrogen but you may have some problems if you have to sit in it.

 

I've actually made a cardboard boat before, the only thing we cheated with is we wrapped the whole thing in heavy duty tarp.

Cardboard and tape alone is another feat in itself.

Don't have any pics on my comp, but we built it to resemble a jonboat, or like a mini D Day lander type of boat. It was the easiest design, and required little effort. Just interlaced the cardboard and made a few layers of it, and then just taped the hell out of the nose of the thing.

Hey guys...i have 3 weeks to make a cardboard boat for my physics class... made with only cardboard and packing tape, like the stuff used on ups boxes, and it has to fit in the swimming lane of an olympic sized pool....any design suggestions?? i was thinking like a catamoran (excuse my spelling if its wrong) because it would be the most stable...any other suggestions??

Keep in mind this is a race also, so i need speed too.

 

any other constraints? how big are we talking? does it have to do anything besides float (turn, hold something)?

i think a dual hull design would be the fastest and most stable

thanks....and thats it, just carboard and tape....float....and race the boat....needs to hold my fat arse and one other...im 200 lbs, so i need to make sure its strong

 

Holy crap. It has to hold u and another person?? Tape will be your friend and will help protect the cardboard from the water. Pics of this progress.

 

200 lbs of you- plus another?? - You need a lot of surface area to support that.

Make sure you calculate the displacement too-So you have enuf sidewall to have freeboard remaining

 

well that makes it a lot more complicated. are you and your friend about the same weight?

 

no, hes 118 lbs....so im the fat one...lol

 

I would layer carboard that is taped up nice for the hull of whatever it is you build. So it would go water->tape->cb->tape->cb->tape. The last layer having tape on both sides. Make sure you tabe the edges of the cardboard. especially if it is corrugated.

haha, thanks, we actually had the bridges already...but out of toothpicks...took me 3 months and held 60 lbs...it was about 2 feet long, so i did okay on that, but im stumped on the boat project
