Catalytic Converter

I have a 1992 Pick-UP 4x4 with a 3.0, 271-K miles. I have thought about removing the catalytic converter and running a straight pipe to the muffler. I’m hearing pros and cons about doing this. Some say, the engine is designed to have back pressure and others say that all bunk, the back pressure. I’m sure the converter is plugged after all these years and miles. What’s the feeling here about removing the converter? BTW....the sensor is up stream.

 

Don’t know if it’s clogged. Giving the truck to my son who lives in Alabama. He wanted to take the converter off because of the miles and age.

 

Basically, will we damage the old engine by removing the catalytic converter.

 

Absolutely not... I ran 1990, '92 ans '93 MIatas (400k+ miles) with no cats, and '99 and '03 Mustang GTs (nearly 200k) all it will do is smell a bit--but no worse than any other pre-cat vehicle. The biggest problem will be passing emissions testing, if you live in a place that does that...
