My 2002 Tacoma came with a cassette player which died & I want to replace it with CD player. I’m looking for the old fashioned one, not the bluetooth kind. However, I’m pretty sure I need a single din to have the volume controls that came with the pickup. I don’t see one anywhere online, as we exhausted local junkyard options. Does what I’m looking for exist?? Or is it that I need the other 2002 Tacoma which comes with a CD player?

    4 run, 2 don't
All the Tacoma's I've seen have double din radios, at least my 2001 did and every other Tacoma I've seen out there

Maybe someone will come in here and offer theirs, as CD players were available from the factory

Just make sure you keep the side brackets or "ears" from your factory radio to mounting into your vehicle as many people keep those or toss them away; I've got a factory cd player somewhere in storage and would happily give it away so I bet you'll find others doing the same

I remember every Toyota back then having a double din combination CD/cassette player and then using a crappy cassette adapter to play my iPod.

I had a 2003 VW and a 2012 Audi. They both had single CD players, with the option for remote multi disk changers. So perhaps another brand may work?
One thing is for sure - there are more retired early 2000 VWs out there than Tacos.

Just cause a single din cd capable head unit has the bluetooth feature doesnt mean you have to use it. Just get whatever entry level model from the brand you like (alpine is great) and send it.

I don’t think they make stereos without Bluetooth anymore, but it is still possible to get a stereo with a CD player. They make dash bezels that allow you to install single-DIN or double-DIN head units in both 1st and 2nd Gen Tacos. :)

I had a single-DIN aftermarket stereo in my 2010 for more than three years, and I only replaced it because I wanted a backup camera, which require a double-DIN unit with a screen.

You can certainly run a single DIN, I have seen a few installs with a single DIN unit with a President McKinley CB under it that also fits single DIN. I have a McKinley that I would like to do that with but I have a sweet double DIN...compromises.

I think some had a coin cubby under a single DIN but I may be wrong. I might be mistaking it for a install kit to use a single DIN. To the OP...Metra is the company that makes most of the adapters. Search their site.

Though sadly so many of those years of Tacomas got crushed.

I have one with the slot above the radio but have had the below one as well in another vehicle.

I have a pretty nice Kenwood double DIN you can have for shipping. CD, DVD (I think), and it has plenty of inputs and outputs. It can certainly be setup to use steering wheel controls but it would require an adapter. Let me know. Came out of my truck when I upgraded.

Mine is an '03 so it should be the same as yours, a double DIN. I'm a stock guy, don't like mods much so I wanted an original. In mine the CD player went south. Found one on eBay for $125. You have to keep looking, most of the ones on ebay are junkyards parting out. You will see dust but the two things to look for are how worn the knobs/face printing is and pay close attention to the model numbers printed on the front, this will get you an exact replacement. Some of the Toyota car or Tundra ones from 01-04 will fit.

These are probably not the right ones but look close at the wear on the knobs here (note no CD player) and look at this one. There are many more.

My 98 had a cassette and CD player stock.
And yes… the adapter to listen to your IPod was clutch.
