Is it normal to hear a slight clunk when disengaging the 4x4 system? (from 4HI to 2HI)

Also, should I engage it periodically (in a straight) to keep the system lubed if I am not using it for months on end?

    Thanks

The clunk is completely normal. Both the transfer case and the front axle can make a slight noise. As far as engaging 4hi on occasion, there is very little need. That is mostly useful on trucks with lockout hubs. When the hubs are not engaged then the differential does not spin and half of the ring gear does not get oil. Our differentials always spin.

I suppose there might be some benefit to exercising the actuator motors so they stay free. But I would imagine that would be a minimal risk.

When disengaging from 4H back to 2WD right before you turn the knob take your foot off the gas pedal so there's no load on the driveline and you won't get the clunk noise.... it will be smooth as butter. I try to make the switch either on level ground or down hill... never up hill.

10-4, 4x4 is the way to go and Toyota does want us to engage it monthly so when it rains or snows... or on a straight road if dry... Naturally, getting Off Road is the best!

Apparently I need to spend more time in my user's manual. My mechanic background disagrees with this, but I do try to stick to Toyota's recommendations.
