    Hello Everyone,

I have a 50k miles on my truck.

I noticed there is a clunk noise when i drive off a couple feet and when i put it into reverse the same noise could be heard after moving a couple feet.

    Anyone have this happening also?

    Is it normal?

Funny you are posting this, I was about to post the same thing. My symptoms are very noticeable when applying or releasing the brake pedal, I'm sure someone has experienced this symptom at one point that can chime in. Any input on this matter would be highly appreciated!!!!!

I dont notice anything when braking. Its more of a clunk when driving off and then nothing. Then once I try parallel park and put it on Reverse, couple feet of it moving clunk, then to Drive and move a bit and clunk.

Without knowing if the Clunks are coming from (front or rear), I would check control arm bolts and U-joints on the driveshaft.

How old are the break pads...mine would clunk coming from the retaining pin from the break pads. I took them out cleaned them up and it stopped. I also had a clunk coming from my lower control arms, torqued them and it went away.
Post a video or give a little direction. These trucks clunk, especially once you start tinkering with them.

I too suspect it’s brake related, I’ll have to set it in jack stands with a helper and put on reverse and drive and pin point the origin of the noise. The pads still have some life in them, but I will check them out as well as the bolts on drive shaft and lower ball joints. I’ll post results if I find them for anyone experiencing similar problems. Thank you all for chiming in!!

The brake pads shift back and forth in the caliper with direction changes. Non issue.

So the pads traveling back and forth making a clonk noise is normal and it’s just the way they function? The clonk doesn’t bother me, I just worried something else is getting damaged.

Skid plates are known to make that noise.

Yes, if you look at how the pads sit in the caliper, it will all become clear. They are only generally located by the pins they are attached by…the pins can flex and the brake pads will then move up and down with the rotor. When you change directions braking, that will shift the pads again until they clunk up against the caliper.

I had a pretty loud clunk/creaking sound when going in/out of my driveway. Turned out to be the engine/transmission skid plate spacer was missing. Luckily it was sitting there….must have moved when I put the bolt in.

I have also noticed that very mild clunk with then brake pads when it’s in the carport and the sound can be heard easier.

OP, also check your motor mounts. My wife breaks a motor mount about once every decade on her Corolla and Camrys (3 motor mounts since we’ve been married). I’ve been married for 38 years, so I know motor mount number 4 is coming up.
