2022 Lunar Rock Tacoma - SR5 Trail Edition
Hi all. After years of driving a Honda Civic and scrimping and saving, I’ve ordered a 2022 Lunar Rock DCSB and couldn’t be more stoked.

    I was wondering:

    1) How does paint matching on a canopy work? Does the manufacturer just take one off the shelf that was made with the lunar rock paint? Do they have to manufacture it specifically? Do they need to paint match to my specific vehicle? If Toyota stops making lunar rock trucks will they be able to build it still? Sorry if it’s a stupid question I’m new here.

    2) Can anybody recommend a canopy? LEER, Snugtop, ARE… anyone have good or bad experiences with them?

    Thanks!

I don't know about color matching, but I can recommend ARE camper tops. I had one 20 years ago on my first Toyota truck (before the T100, or Tacoma). I bought it used and had good luck with it. I just bought another used ARE V-series yesterday for my new to me 2020 Taco Access Cab. It is solidly built and fits perfectly. Mine has the drivers side tool box, thus the white windoor panel. I only paid $400 for it, which is about 1/5 of the price of new.

They manufacture to your specs. Get A.R.E.

The canopy/cap/topper dealer gets your paint code out of door jamb and sends to to manufacturer. They mix or order paint. Match will be right on or could be slightly off. All depends on how many variances, that color has. Some have none, some have many variances. Most are out 2 to 3 months on orders.

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
    Welcome to TW!
I put a Leer mid-rise on my '06 TRD OR AC and a Leer 180 (mid-rise) on my '21 TRD OR AC.
The manufacturers paint the caps to match which is why there's a fair lead time. Color match for both of mine was just fine.
As long as body shops are needed I would expect that your paint color would be available.
As long as you're willing to wait I expect you'll get the color you want. Just don't expect it to be 'on the shelf' just waiting for your order.

    Yep, this.

When you place an order for a cap the dealer will take the paint code off the door (it’s directly under the VIN) and send it to the manufacturer as part of the order specs.

    Congrats on the new truck!!

Just FYI, I ordered a cap from A.R.E. a few weeks ago and their current lead time is 15 weeks. So don’t expect to get anything soon if you’re buying a new cap. I think Leer has a slightly shorter lead time at the moment.

I obviously haven’t taken delivery of my cap yet but I can tell you that the options A.R.E offers are fantastic and super customizable.

I chose ARE for mine, primarily because that brand was carried by vendor that was within 60 miles of home. Special ordered was about 6 weeks, carpeted and roof rack, and cab side window hinged for glass cleaning purposes. I've seen decent color matches from a few different brands. My only complaint with my shell was obvious rookies who assembled the roof rack incorrectly. Easy enough fix. 20211124_125137.jpg
