A needle tip for the grease gun. It allows you to slip the needle between the axle and the boot collar after you take off the small end boot clamp. If the sound goes away after adding grease, you will know it is dry. Most likely you will find that the boot has a tear in it, and will have to be repaired.

no visible tears or grease around the area. what else could have caused this? If clicking is not the same as broken what does it sound like/act like if broken. minus the noise everything acts fine

If it was broke, it would make some pretty nasty noises and you would not have 4wd.

not broken then for sure. 4wheel drive works and just the random noise

Best to jack up and turn by hand. You can decide if you want to repair or replace when you know for sure.

How much range of motion is there with wheels on the ground? If you can rotate it and/or there is a lot of play you might have a bigger issue. Otherwise you might just need to regrease the boots.
