I just noticed my cvc boot is torn and leaking oil out of it.. Not bad enough that its dripping on the ground... My question is it safe to drive very far? I am up in the mountains three hours from home ,, should i have it towed or drive to the nearest dealer or whats the opinion of diving it back home.. I just dont want to cause any more damage then alteady done... Any idea what a dealer would charge for repair? Thanks for any info i can get here on this great forum.

Yes, you are fine. There is a lot more grease in the joint then you would think and it will not cause any other problems. the only way to ruin one is to have it completely ripped and it fill with sand.

I rebuild a lot of CVs

A full CV rebuild kit is $40 from the Dealer. Comes with both boots (inner and outer) all the clips and snap rings, The Grease, and steel boot clamps.

    Tools needed:
    Snap ring pliers
Mini sledge or an ok sized hammer.
a 3 jaw puller (can be rented at autozone)
a piece of tube or pipe Bigger then 1" wide
if you use the OEM style boot clamps they have a special set of pliers you can rent or buy to put those on.
    a vise helps
Lots and lots of paper towels

As other have said, might be better off replacing the half axle. Much less mess and quicker. For $180 (that includes shipping), I'd replace with an RCV half axle. For $100 you can replace with a cheapo part. The cheapo part is not as strong as OEM but would allow you to re-boot the OEM axle and keep it as a spare?

Personally I went with the RCV choice and couldn't be happier. Top quality.

Sorry - total brain fart. I had been looking at one point to see if RCV was a potential option. I meant to say CVJ axles from Denver.

Having said that, I looked up the price for my last half axle and it was:
    $85 + $75 (Core) + $42 (shipping)
It cost me about $30 to ship so ~$180 net + my elbow grease

    Apologies for the confusion.
