Every choice made is some form of compromise.

You want all the goodie from the internet, you 'pay' by having advertisers stalk you. That's how all your 'free' content gets funded, when they pay the provider of your tracking info.

    Nothing is free.

Yes, one can control (or limit) a few things. Use private session browsers. Constantly blow off cookies. Don't do any online shopping.

Think about it. How many people on this site alone ask for weblinks to vendor ABC, when all they have to do is pick up the phone and call them.

Want to go off grid? It can be done if you want to live like you did in the early 90's and back.

    It really wasn't that bad.

I will say this. Having a quality ID theft insurance product is probably a good idea. And not LifeLock, the one where the yokel drives around with his SS on the side of the truck. He's been hammered multiple times. And they've been in court for failure to perform several times.

Gov't knows more about me than I care for. When I was getting my Secret Clearance I had one of the FBI dudes say we could not find a Facebook account on you and I said congratulations on digging. He said you have one right I said did you find one? He said no that's why I'm asking. I said you already have your answer NO!

Part of the problem is the debate as to what is considered public domain vs private domain. Its a well established fact that a photographer can photograph anyone they choose when they are in public environments, i.e. public beaches, sidewalks, inside public buildings, etc. Hence why the paparazzi can get away with so much. In the real world, the rules have been hashed out over time and are pretty cut and dry. However, the Internet is a different beast because there hasn't been any consistent legal establishment of what is considered private vs public domain. Is Facebook really a public domain when you access it from the privacy of your home? When you message someone on FB from the privacy of your home to someone else in the privacy of their home, do advertisers have a right to know what the conversation is? The same goes for this TW forum. Its a public space for members, but is it a private club in a "public space" ( internet ) or considered to be in our own private "building" per say?

That is what the legislative and judicial branches have yet to iron out. Mind you, the advertisers will throw bushels of money at the representatives and senators for favorable laws that make it easy for or even to try to corner courts to rule in their favor.

Some make fun of us techies for wearing our tin foil hats, but there is a real basis behind it.

All the time. Some start ups move hard and fast without the controls over data security that are written into law. Some very large companies that have ample resources and time don't properly invest in securing all of that data they collect (looking at YOU Equifax). Then there are those that violate consent decrees from the FCC (like Facebook has) where the requirements for ensuring data integrity are not well defined, in which case the lawyers get involved and that litigation takes years.

I and all the other moderators appreciate all the members of TW and their use of TW. You all are helping us pay it back to Toyota by offsetting our monthly car payments. Oh, and in one case, helping support Ford and the exceptional Ford F-150 with Eco Boost.

    ...too much shit to list.
TW has always been a site dedicated to the members, not Bob or the staff. This is why we don’t accept donations or spam adds or request membership fees. It’s dedicated to the enthusiasts. The founder of TW doesn’t expect the members to bear the burden of the costs to run the site.
Read into it how you want, but TW has always been a community for the members.

No, not at all. We as moderators get paid absolutely nothing for what we do on TW.

It was a satirical comment in light of the topic.

One thing I will commend @tcBob for is his steadfast resistance to sell TW or any of his other forums to any company for profit. He doesn’t even accept donations from members to run any of his forums. I’m sure money is made by some advertisements based on products discussed in threads (hence Amazon being automatically hyperlinked when typed).

In the vast wildness of the internet TW and bob’s forums are probably the last vestiges of a safe, not for profit social platform where the members matter more than the bottom dollar.
