They should of called you first to release that information but they did not break any laws that I can think of.

If you ever serviced the vehicle at any dealership they post that to Toyota Owners online so if they never deregistered you are the owner the new owner might be able to get your information there.

There is no HIPPA type law.

Interesting how states are so different in titles. My Tacoma was first owned and titled in Oregon, then the second owner lived in Texas. The dealership in TX bought the truck and sent me the original Oregon title along with a Texas transfer of ownership once I bought the truck, and I drove it back to TN. Quite fascinating across 3 states, I wind up with an original title with the names and addresses from the 2 previous owners. If my DMV had not lost the title, that same title would have been sent to me by the lienholder once the loan was paid off. The title had additional block forms on it for future owner/transfers.

Cool to hear how other states deal with titles. DMV.org has info on requirements for every state, but what a load of pages to sludge through just to find simple answers.

When it comes to private sales(no dealership involved). When you write the "Bill of Sale" both parties have their information on it. When it comes to a dealership. The dealership would buy the vehicle and when they resell it, it has their information on it. It shouldn't have the previous owners information on it. This is where I'm from though, it could be different where you are?

I'd speak to an lawyer to see what scale this type of punishment should be. Lady got millions for spilling her McDonald's coffee on her.

We all pretty much have agreed on that point. The discussion I think centered mostly around if there was a LEGAL rather than MORAL violation. I think we have narrowed it down to a moral one. Can't wait to hear the outcome.

The same thing was practiced at the GM dealerships I worked at. Advisers couldn't have ROs on top of desk at all, unless discussing it with the customer. In the shop things were different because we really never saw any customers back there.

Dealerships do not become a new owner when you trade in, they gain power of attorney to do the title work.

I cannot believe they gave the information out... I would demand money haha.

Alright folks...Sat down with the Sales Director today and have to say that everything went really well. They accepted responsibilty for the incident and made good on rebuilding our business relationship. My girlfriend is a lawyer so I had her do some research prior to the meeting to see what kind of weight I had to swing around...She didnt find much, but we knew the inconvenience was enough to request compensation. I was surprised at how open they were to making things right...at the end of the meeting I walked out with an extended maintenance plan (3 additional yrs), an extended bumper to bumper platinum warranty (5yr/72k), TRD Exhaust System w/ installation, all weather mats(Have weathertechs, but took them anyway :) ) and filled my tank...I think I did pretty good and Im pleased with the professionalism they showed after the fact....thanks for all of your input! Take it easy....

I'd say they more than adequately compensated you for your inconvenience, even if you were to have to change your phone number over the ordeal from continuing trouble. I'm sure nobody there will repeat that mistake in the near future.

That's good that they made everything right. "If" they were to fight it would have taken more from them to do so. So I am sure that they(and you) are breathing a sigh of relief now. I'm also sure that they're going to make changes within and to their staff about privacy of their customers. Good on you though for doing it though. There are people in this world who wouldn't have wanted the hassle and the crap to fight this. In the end everyone is happy. :)

of course there are also the people who would try to sue them for every nickel they had, glad OP didn't go that route for something as simple as a phone number.
