GL-5 is an EP (exteme pressure) rated lubricant. The additives that make it so don't get along will with copper/brass like the symchro's in manual transmissions. That'ts were GL-4 rated oils come in.

    https://www.rymax-lubricants.com/updates/the-differences-between-gl-4-and-gl-5/

The main difference between GL-4 and GL-5 gear oils is the amount of EP additives. Sulphur/Phosphorus containing products are used as EP-additive. This additive has the purpose to prevent the occurrence of micro-welds on the gear flanks at the local high temperatures which prevail in EP circumstances (temperatures well in excess of 800℃!) GL-5 has roughly twice the amount of EP additives compared to GL-4, which is why it is often used in high-pressure circumstances such as in a front axle and rear axle differential.

Sulphur/Phosphorus additives however have an unfavourable property: they can react aggressively towards bronze and copper. This can be disastrous for the synchromesh rings of a gearbox. Therefore it is not recommended to use GL-5 in a gearbox unless the manufacturer allows this.

No I was asking if the Lexus drain plugs were the same size for both front and back diffs.

The rear diff drain plug already is a hex nut plug. Don’t need one for the rear

Glad you test. And what do the results say that makes it better than all the rest? In practical terms please. Longer OCI?

Won't make a bit of difference, get whatever is on sale and your truck will last just as long

I did the front diff on my ‘22 at ~8500mi. That’s when I did the lift, and pro-actively did the ECGS bushing during that time. Since I had to add gear oil to the front diff anyway (lost a little when I pulled the axle), I went ahead and did a complete drain and fill with Redline 75W85. OEM gear oil looked brand new. Very little anything on the drain plug magnet.

Same here as for the front diff and the TC. While not in 4wd only the spider gears spin in the front diff and not the ring and pinion so very little if even any break in wear happens there unlike the rear diff. Did all of then only because i have already purchased enough 75W90 to do them all. Should probably have only done the rear diff and waited much longer to do front and TC. Will see how they look at 100,000 when i do the rear diff again, probably still pristine.

I think once you do the first fluid changes on both diff’s and the transfer case, you’re done for the life of the vehicle. The gears have already polished against each other. Unless you’ve submerged your axles, this should no longer be a maintenance item.

I’m doing mine tomorrow (along with the coolant) at a little over 32K on the odometer, a 6 year old ‘Taco.

Does the rear diff take 4 quarts on the 3rd gen SR 2.7 models?

There literally millions and millions of high mileage vehicles still running around, that have never had the diff’s ever checked, or gear oil replaced. I’m not just referring to ‘Tacos.

I did my coolant today. Too sore to do the diff’s, I’m doing those tomorrow though. Then the service on them will be finished for the life of my ‘Taco. I plan on driving this truck until I get into my grave. I have the utmost confidence that the Valvoline Synthetic 75w-90 will see me to that.

You are correct. There are also many vehicles that have never had an oil change out there on the road...does that make it a best practice?

    Cheers

Engines opposed to differentials (operation, purpose and lubrication requirements) are two very different arguments.
