I thought I ha d read something about upgrading to newer 4Runner brakes, they are larger then the 2006(?) tundra upgrade. Curious what anyone knows or what info they can provide. I’ve looked around, but no real help. Is it plug and play…..?

You need 5th gen 4runner calipers, and 4th gen rotors (for the 17" wheels -sports, limiteds)

Doing this upgrade is not plug and play. To make the calipers fit, a bit of material must be machined off of the ears to they align correctly with the rotors.

The biggest con to that - in my opinion - is that if a caliper should ever fail (on the trail, for instance), you can't just go to your local parts store (Napa, O'R, etc.) and pick up a new caliper; you also need to find somewhere to correctly machine it for you.

The Tundra Brake Upgrade is completely bolt on and easy to get parts for. It can lock up all four even on the heaviest rigs. Totally the better way to go IMO.

This page has a great step-by-step guide (with pics) on the TBU upgrade, as well as links to all the parts needed (at varying price points). OEM is best for the pads, but for the calipers you shouldn't pay the premium. Get them from your local parts store (ideally) or Amazon, which will give a lifetime warranty in case you ever need to replace them. And don't forget the upgraded lines, they make a big difference with the larger calipers.

Nope, its completely bolt on 100%. No modifications to the calipers or rotors need to be made. You have to use 5th gen calipers but 4th gen rotors as they have a different offset. Rotor diameter is the same, as well as pads

Ahh, never heard of this then. Interesting. How big are the rotors compared to Tundra?

I'd love to see a success story with that setup. The rotor offset from 4th gen is within that 3-4.0mm offset otherwise needed to remove from the caliper "ears" as most have done in past?

Any pictures or build thread? That would be ideal if they line up without machining.

I mean, it's certainly a possibility... guess I'd need to
    • know for sure it works
    • figure out the necessary parts
Personally, my sense is that it doesn't really make sense (in that I've never seen a case where TBU wasn't enough braking), but I know that "make sense" isn't why we all do the mods we do... at least not all the time. Sometimes bigger is just ... what we want.

I've got a few buddies with 5th gen T4Rs, will have a look at the setup and figure out if it can work.

My thoughts exactly. My Tacoma weighs 4400 pounds when empty. I've towed 3500 pounds and the Tundra brakes did perfectly fine.
