I change the oil at 5000-miles and normally use dino oil in all of my other vehicles. So, with the '09 Taco, what is the better oil to use? I'm asking because I have 11 quarts of the proper weight dino oil in the cabinet and my other vehicles call for a different multi-weight oil.

    Thanks,

    Ray

I'll probably switch to syn. once I run through the dino oil I already have. However, the current dino oils are good for 5000+miles and it seems like such a waste of $$$ to change syn oil every 5000-miles.

My Tacoma just crossed 1000 miles...I'll change over this weekend.

I visited Wal-Mart this evening and picked up four 5 quart jugs, and two 1 quart jugs of Mobile-1 5W 30. I have four YZZD3's...

    I'm good :D

I agree......I'm still using dino oil since I get free oil changes til 30k miles (I always check to make sure dealership changes oil filter), I was told we could go 7,500 miles between changes with synthetic and if thats true it would be beneficial to use syn

If you extend the oil change interval to 7500-miles can you reprogram the "maintenance required" light?

Extended drain intervals are only one advantage to synthetic.
IMHO, it is not the biggest advantage, it's just the primary advantage pushed by sellers because changing less often makes the higher price easier to swallow.

I change at 5000, with synthetic.

My truck is at 294k miles and I run Mobil 1 EP 5W30 synthetic 8k-10k miles between drains.

No issues with the engine, which does not use any more oil than it did new.

Synthetic oil may allow you extended intervals...

But.... the synthetic oil can get very dark and dirty. For me personally, I change it at 5K miles.

Synthetic is more than just 'extended oil intervals' - synthetic oils penetrate further than regular oils. They also act as a cleansing agent to help prevent sludge buildup. And that 'buildup' shows up in the oil as being 'discolored & dark'

I was just saying to myself today, "It's been a few seconds since someone started a dino vs synthetic thread."

TWO HUNDRED NINETY FOUR THOUSAND MILES. Wow. That's impressive. Good job, dude.

I would give it more time before going to syn, give your motor a little more time to seat first (rings, and bearings), or you might be sorry. I normally recommend 5K before switching, my .02

Either oil gets dark, no matter what type, normally the color is caused by fuel blowby into the crankase causing burnt fuel to mix with the engine oil..

    No need.

Many engines... including the 2012 Tacoma 2.7... come from the factory with synthetic.
The Vette and many European luxury vehicles have had synth from the factory for 10 years.

This isn't 1975 anymore... Both engines and synthetic oils have changed.

Synthetic. I run the cheaper Napa Synthetic but I change early at 3k or less intervals. I used synthetic in my very first oil change at 1k miles and the engine is doing fine now at 13k miles on the odo. It still looks brand new inside the engine from what I can see through the oil filler tube. Nice and clean

Assuming that dino sitting on the shelf is relatively fresh oil, use it. You'll (nor your engine) will notice the difference. The only way to rationalize synthetic is if you want to use a 10,000 mile change interval. Otherwise it's a purely emotional decision.

Toyota says change it every 5000kms I don't see why ppl want extended oil changes, especially with vvti and the sludge problems they've had. Castrol gtx is the way to go.
