where specifically is the gray connector next to the battery? Will this keep the TRAC from coming back on when you hit 30mph?? Thank you

 

Just fyi... it is VSC that comes on at 30 mph if you are in AUTO LSD mode. Auto LSD is TRACtion control without engine regulation... and to add confusuion AUTO LSD is also called TRAC OFF MODE!

2WD TRAC (traction control with engine regulation)
2WD AUTO LSD/ TRAC OFF MODE (traction control without regulation)
VSC OFF MODE (no VSC and no traction control)

At least through 2011:
4WD-HI TRAC (traction control without regulation)
4WD-LO (no traction control, except on the Off Road TRD)
A-TRAC (Off Road TRD traction control in low range)

 

Someone told me today that there is a switch for that located under the steering wheel with two wires attached one is gray and one is white.

so on a 2015 2wd mode, when do i use traction on(lsd off) and when do i use traction off(lsd on).
also when to use it on 4wd hi and lo mode?

 

You have the terms wrong, but don't feel bad, Toyota didn't help with the names they used!

Traction Control (TRAC with engine regulation on or off) is 'Limited Slip' (TRAC is electronic/ brake assisted 'LSD').
a) TRAC is 'LSD' with engine output regulation (also called throttle control) and
b) TRAC OFF (called 'AUTO LSD' in 2WD) is TRAC without any engine regulation, only the regulation is turned OFF.
You get into AUTO LSD or TRAC OFF by quickly pressing the VSC OFF button, stopped or moving. VSC does go off to 30 mph, then comes on.

To turn OFF the LSD (turns off the traction control and vehicle stability control together) is called VSC OFF MODE. That requires stopping the truck and pressing in the VSC Off button for a few seconds (until VSC OFF light comes on). It stays off until you drive dangerously or restart the truck, then comes back on.

When to use what? When you need or want to!

If it were me:
*Normal driving, paved roads: H2/TRAC
*Any slipping, due to wet or gravel surface: H2/AUTO LSD (TRAC OFF) or H4/TRAC ON
*Soft or wet dirt roads, sand or level off road driving: H4/TRAC OFF on 2012+ (called TRAC 2009-2011)
*Steep climbs, deep mud, deep snow, power beneficial situations, deep ruts, etc.: L4 (A-TRAC on if Off Road TRD).

** I find never a reason for VSC OFF MODE, never! To take away the limited slip features the 2009+ Tacomas have is to have a lesser able truck that requires a locker to go as far as 4WD with traction control can take it now.

 

so what would you use with L4? trac control or auto lsd?

 

In L4, there is no TRAC or AUTO LSD.
There is either nothing or there is A-TRAC if you have the Off Road TRD.
The non-Off Road 4x4 Tacomas can perform the 4-Lo Trac Mod (Yellow Wire Mod) to add TRAC to L4 to have some limited slip in Low Range.
'Auto LSD' is only a 2WD mode.
