Hello everyone, my 4x4 DCSB has the stock Dunlop AT20 tires. I am located in Maryland, and we got hit with a pretty good winter last season. Are these tires good performers in heavy snow? They dont look like they would be. Im trying to find an excuse to jump up to 265/75/R16s (without doing a lift), and I figured that would be a pretty good one. Any input would be great. Thanks.

Thanks for the helpful response, Jefferson.

To the OP, as Larry stated, the Dunflops are no good (especially in snow). Look for a winter rated tire instead such as the Michelin X-ice or Bridgestone Blizzak. I think they have a symbol on the sidewall of a snowflake or something.

Worst tires I've ever driven on. They are OK in light snow - nothing more. They squeal around every corner for me...

I'm a pretty experienced snow driver, we get a lot of it in the mountains and I'm up there a lot in the winter time. My Tacoma has the stock AT20's on it and they seem to be wearing really good.

I got stuck in 4" of snow on a gravel pull off last year. I had to put sticks under the rear tires to get back onto the pavement. Not exactly performance I'd expect from an all season tire on a 4x4. They slicked up with mud, snow, and ice. Pretty sure the lugs are also rock hard.

I'll echo that they squeak at weird times and act stressed through what should be easy corners.

Unfortunately because they are wearing so good I can't get the wife on board to replace them.

Ok, thanks guys. Looks like I'll be searching for a better and larger tire. With bigger tires "has" to come with new rims, too...right..? I can already feel my wallet getting lighter.

You can put a larger tire on the rims you have. I have the Duncrap 245 16's on steelies. I'm going to go to 265's as soon as I decide which tire.

I was considering that actually. On my old Tacoma I had the BFG ATs. Mud, rain, snow, sand, they performed very well...they are just a tad bit expensive, and since my off roading days are mostly over, Im not trying to pay $1000 for just tires...not even including rims.

I have been browsing around the internet, and found these..

    http://m.autoanything.com/wheels-rims/pro-comp-7031-series-alloy-wheels

I do like the look and they would leave a good bit of money later to pull the trigger on good tires. Definately still looking though.

I was considering that, and I might just do that to start off with. I do eventually want to different rims, but Im considering it.

I once saw tirerack offering these up at $79. That price should tell you something. Completely insulting toyota would put a shitty oem tire like this on a 30k vehicle. With that said, the only good that came from mine was their quietness on dry pavement. Other than that, they were shot at 30k and horrid on snow and ice and planed on wet pavement. A joke.

One of the absolute worse tires I have ever driven on, I did wait until about 30k before I changed them, a couple of rough MN winters, (although the truck did not see much action) even on dry pavement the ride was terrible, Toyota should be ashamed to put such a tire on a vehicle they represent

Which might explain why my opinion of them differs from the majority here. At only 5K on the clock, I may change my mind later, but for now, I've had no issues with them.

Mine were great for DD, but we're at 3/32 by 21k miles and some change.

For anyone that likes these tires and purchases a good tire you'll get a whole new truck. Just the sidewall flex alone is horrific it'll handle so much better with a good tire.

They work for many, actually. Are there better? Of course.

I had a set on my 05 4Runner and hated them. When I got my 2015 Taco I changed them for BFG AT KO2's at only 500 miles. If you never plan to leave the highway I suppose they would be fine.

I dont plan on leaving the highway much...my off roading days are mostly over. I figured though I would need a better tire for driving in snow. I would hate to have a very capable 4wd truck that gets stuck because the tires suck.

I dumped my Dunflops at 2,800 miles? Close to that. I've got a thread all about it.

Anyhow, I drove on TWO light snow days (call it powder packed down by traffic) with them after I got my pickup. One time I pulled over for a passing firetruck. On pavement, from a dead stop I had to switch to 4x4 just to get the truck to MOVE at all. Rear end kept sliding sideways and I had no traction.

After much reading of reviews, asking tires shops, asking folks online, I determined the Michelin LTX M/S2's were the right All Season tire for me.

    Here's my thread: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/michelin-ltx-m-s-2-initial-thoughts.371951/

If you want a dedicated snow tire I'd suggest Blizzak. Had them on my passenger cars I owned before. Best studless snow tire out there.
