2016 White Tacoma Sport

Just purchased 2021 OR. Tried to update nav system maps on map update screen. last update shown is April 2020. I expected to see no updates at this time. Instead I received a message to call dealer. I called the dealer’s tech expert. He said the maps are updated thru dynamic nav.,which I determined is cloud based and does not work in Canada. Plus it is fee based after a trial. Also the base system maps are AISINAW which updated periodically. Does anyone know how this really works? The Tacoma I traded used SD cards to update system maps.
