Emblems Falling Off Tailgate

    Hello everyone, I have a 2007 Tacoma TRD Sport. I have about 190k miles on it and it still runs and looks amazing. Unfortunately on my tailgate, I have a few emblems falling off, this is actually no surprise to me because I do wash this truck frequently. (not lately due to work) I was wondering if you guys had this issue and if so how did you fix it. I do not want to disturb the paint because after 13 years the paint still looks very good. The tailgate is not the original tailgate,

    You need a Double sided 3M Tape from Auto Parts Store! Take off gently,clean emblem back with a razor and clean residue off tail gate with alchohol . Retape emblem and reapply after thorough cleaning !

    +1 on the "Auto Parts Store", there is a difference between the white and the gray double sided tapes. A friend of mine learned this the hard way.:rofl:

    none
    New ones from ebay are reasonably priced & the adhesive is already there. Just peel backing off & stick on. main thing either way, get the surface clean & smooth. My Reg. cab had none so I made it look lots better by installing them.

    Definitely +1 on 3M exterior weatherstripping tape. The grey-black kind with the red release film. It'll last.

    I'd use gentle solvents like mineral spirits and then isopropyl alcohol to clean the original emblem and or the tailgate. I always wax the surface before putting on taped emblems.

    (No razor blades for me -- I'd rather use chemistry than a sharp edge.)

    I would remove them . You can use fishing line or dental floss and basically saw through the glue. Then follow up with goo gone. If you still want emblems ebay has full kits for very reasonable price. I changed mine over to black. They were they same size C5BD470C-A8C2-4DD4-BE2D-C3AB1E5D429F.jpg

    Thanks, guys for all the helpful info I really appreciate it. I got the emblem off and cleaned the back of it and the tailgate and got all the excess glue off. I cleaned the tailgate well and used the 3m emblem adhesive glue and reapplied it. To get the glue off I just used diluted mineral spirits and a heat gun. It should hold for a while haha.

    Has this worked out for you? It's counterintuitive. Normally most instructions say to remove surface waxes to get proper adhesion.

    Yeah, it doesn’t seem consistent with what’s often recommended, does it?

    I’ve done it this way for years, probably dozens of times with all kinds of badges and emblems. My idea is that it’s easier to wash or wipe away all the schmutz that builds up in the nooks and crannies if the surface is waxed.

    Seems to work fine. I’ve seen no evidence that waxing lowers the surface energy enough to interfere with adhesion, at least for good quality adhesives like OEM emblems or 3M mounting tape and the low stress on an emblem. It seems easier to clean, too, but I don’t have any side by side data for comparison of that.

    (And I’m sensitive to these kinds of things, ‘cause in real life I spent 40 years in and around coatings research..)

    I have the same issue. Heat gun hasn’t helped much getting the old, black adhesive off.

    I like the emblemless look, but you can use 3m double sided tape to put it back on after cleaning old adhesive
