These engines have roller rockers, not roller lifters...at least from what I've been able to find and read online.

Truck is still in the shop two days later so if the noise is normal they're sure wasting a lot of time "fixing" it.

I have worked in dealerships and now own my own shop. I completely disagree with you on this post. A quality tech is just as good as the guy who works in an assembly line building these engines. There is no real difference between the two people. Our engines are built by hand by *gasp* people who are required to work at a fast pace to keep the line moving in the engine assembly area. So your theory that the engine would be sub-par is unfounded. I have yet to work with a tech who does not use the proper torque tools. Now sure, even the best techs can make a mistake, but what really is sad and true is that you believe all techs are sub-par, and can't build an engine as well as the guy at the manufacturing plant.

To the OP, my best wishes that your engine comes back better than it was. While there is some very normal tapping noise coming from these engines from the injectors and other components, VALVE tapping CAN be fixed. I am going to guess that a new head is coming because there is a problem with a valve seat, or valve guide. That would be my belief.

Yes! And guess what it does not come with cams so the tech will have to set the proper clearance him self just like the guys in the line. If a flat rate job comes back the tech gets to fix it again for nothing so flat rate or not he is going to want to see it right when it leaves his/her bay. Gone are the days of grease monkeys and hammers.

I have a 2007, 4 cylinder that has recently started ticking. It goes away after warming up and we had a really cold winter this year. That's when I first noticed it - COLD starts. 175,000 miles on it and I've noticed the mileage is 1 or 2 MPG lower than it's been. This makes me suspect a valve but I'm no mechanic.

He said that the head was "damaged" but other than that didn't have any details. I don't think "service advisors" are necessarily mechanics or technicians.

That being said I'm glad I didn't listen to the "experts", i.e., "they all do that" and actually had them check the noise out. Btw, other than the valve noise the truck has been great...right at 20 mpg, plenty of torque and pickup and has never let me down. Of course, neither have any of my other Tacomas.
