Extra keys?

2008 Pre-Runner, SR-5, quad cab

I hate this huge plastic headed key. It's just TOO big for my keyring given all the other keys I have to carry around from work, house, shop, her car, etc.

If I go to a local and have a blank cut that doesn't have all that plastic head on it, will it work without the chip?

What's the chip for anyway? Am I asking for trouble?

 

It'll open the doors, but won't start the truck. The chip talks to the truck and they have to agree this key goes to this truck before it'll start.

Bonehead at Wallymart told me "we won't make non-chipped copies of chipped keys, if you try to start the car with it you'll burn up the computer and we'll get blamed".

Without the chip, the truck wont start, and another thought i've read that its better to have the truck key alone in a single keyring, the reason is that if you have a lot of keys, the weight can damage the switch over the time....

 

that is so true. my friend had a shitload of keys on keychain with his carkey and over time it just weighed it down and broke it when he was driving on the freeway. he had to hold it up with his hand for the car to start again and get off the freeway.

I only have my car key, autoloc key, tailgate key (tiny), sparetire lock key, hitch lock key(tiny) and my alarm FOB on mine. all my house and office keys are on another keychain.

 

Bonehead indeed. I can see no way that it is remotely possible to burn up the computer simply using an un-chipped key.

 

I've thought about this myself. I'm not a big fan of the gigantic keys that come with the new vehicles. Just thinking out loud, I suppose it might work to cut off the head of the key (or cut out the RFID tag), remove the plastic casing around the steering column, and tape it up inside near the ignition (I don't know how close the RFID tag needs to be to the ignition). Then you could probably use an un-chipped key from then on. But even if it does work I wouldn't do it, I'm personally a big fan of not having my vehicle stolen.
