Ive heard conflicting stories about the importance of rustproofing my new truck. On one hand I hear that the factory rustproofs the undercarriage and many parts are galvanized so do not need rust proofing. On the other hand, I live in Syracuse, NY AKA Salt City USA AKA Snow Capital, so you can imagine the massive amounts of snow & salt I will see. Should I pay the extra $999 to have the rust proofing/sound proofing/paint protection that the dealer provides?

    Cheers!

    Nope.

Fluid Film is your friend. Spend some time searching here for it. It's a great product. Kellsport makes a great kit if you've got a compressor.

How long will you keep the truck? I live near Buffalo, this is my third Toyota (the other 2 being a 2004 Tacoma and 2010 4Runner) and I haven't rust proofed any of them. I always tried to wash them when the temperature got above freezing, and I got rid of the previous two trucks just shy of 100,000 miles each, and neither had any issues with rust, other than some superficial rusting on the trailer hitch.

Well, I hope to keep the truck for a long time. Ten years?!

I'm in Syr all so and there's a Krown rustproofing center in Solvay. I've never used the Krown but I have heard good things about it. I had a 2013 taco i traded in on a 2016 and there was quite a bit of rust on the frame on my 2013. They do use a shitload of salt around here.

At 6 years each for my previous trucks, rust wasn't an issue, but if you're truly in it for the long haul, it's probably worth it.

Go get known or fluid film, and do it yearly. It will protect well and is much cheaper and better than the undercoating crap the dealer wants to sell you.

I have a question about the fluid film , if its oil based dosnt it attract salt to the frame . I've always kept my truck clean at least go to spray car wash once a week and touchless spray every two weeks to get underneath good . then first warm dry week in spring I go under the truck with wire brush to scrape surface rust and spray three coats of rustolium satin black .

After applying fluid film, drive down a dusty road. It will coat the fluid film, anything that sticks to it after that will easily rinse away. The salty stuff may coat, but like mud, will rinse off but without actually touching the metal. The film keeps water and salt off the metal surfaces.

I used this Cavity Wax Spray on the Frame and Underside of my Truck, been thru a lot of salt and sprayed off a couple times at the car wash and everything looks fine. I figured I will continue to use it and spray everything down once a year and should be good to go.

Get it rust-checked at silver city tire in Oneida, it's similar if not the same as fluid film from what research I've done. Way cheaper and better than rubberized undercoating from ziebart.

I tried fluid film on some impact sockets in my tool box drawer and a few weeks later they were all rusted up. It smells terrible all so. The body cavity frame wax is the way to go. We called it frame and body butter. It held up for Years and nothing stuck to it. Shaker knows the real deal. That fluid film couldn't even protect my sockets , I wouldn't waste my time in my truck where it gets exposure to the elements.
