Fear of the sag

Yo,

Just picked up a new DCSB OR 4X4 with TRD Lift and 17 inch Methods and wild peaks. Dealer installed. Love it.

My last taco didn’t have a shell, but my taco before that did. And that one had a good sag on it for years. Hated it.

I realize I can AAL to avoid sag etc but I’m just wondering if anyone thinks I’ll get sag with the TRD lift - if I add a rebel or 100xr? Would love to leave the suspension alone at this point as I love the current stance ya know?

Trd lift is just a 1” block so yes it will sag. At least it will get close and if you put anything in the bed it will happen. I replaced the block with a progressive aal from toytec. No sag.

 

I needed an AAL to counter the sag from a topper (alucab). But after a year it's sagging again, about to swap in new OME HD leaf packs.

 

Two inch block. But I hear ya.

 

Nice truck, congrats. Maybe try something like sumo springs.

 

Will sag. I swear the 3rd gens sag worse than any of my 2nd gens ever did. A couple hundred pounds of weight in the back and I was riding on the bumpstops anytime I got off road. I went expo leaf pack & 5160s because I know it's only gonna get heavier.

This sentence is an oxymoron! If you want sag, then AAL is the way to go. The leaf springs from factory want to sit at the arc they are at, and flatten out with increased load. Then you try to change the arc with a couple of smaller leafs. You now create an imbalance of spring force in the leaf pack and the larger springs and extra load are gonna win.... meaning your AAL leafs are gonna lose the battle...

The only way to prevent sag from extra load and lift is a complete spring pack designed to meet you specific needs of lift and load.

 

This is an ARE sitting on a 1 week old truck. The truck still has 1” of rake after the topper sagged the rear .5”. I’m doing suspension since it bottoms out easily, even on pavement, with 100-200lbs plus the topper

Hi folks! I have a TRD Sport. Would mine sag as much as the off road with a similar topper?

 

To my knowledge, only the shocks are different between the different options of Tacoma, so yes, you would sag the same.

I have a 2" front lift (Bilstein 5100's) and a 1.5" AAL and with the weight of my topper everything is perfectly level. I would swap it out if I were you. I could not imagine having my topper without the AAL. It handles bumps very well.

 

Oh holy hell, I thought only the trail edition had the higher front lift. Shows what I know. Dealer said two inches all around and I believed him. That’s what I get for not looking it up. Oddly, it sits perfectly level though. Believable.

 

Why? A shell/topper is way more useful than a tonneau in my experience. A decent progressive AAL is ~$180 and an easy install.

 

Its a shame that Toyota uses such weak leaf springs. I’ve either installed an add-a-leaf or a full replacement pack on every taco I’ve owned. The 5100 shocks with an AAL is the best $500-700 you’ll spend on the truck!

 

Everything other than the Pro has the same ride height. 2"/1" often sits perfectly level. That is why a 1.5"-2" AAL with the weight of the topper is a nice route.

 

I don't know. Probably because I have a new truck I love and I don't want to "mess with it" too much. I bought it because of its aggressive stance (and I take a ton of trips to Baja and Yosemite and Josh etc). The dealer added the lift on - and, normally, I'd just buy an OR and do it myself but, incredibly, I got the dealer to knock a bunch of money off of the add ons. And go under MSRP. They can do this when they have play (mark up) on dealer added stuff. Honestly, Longo in the LA area is the place to buy a truck.

Anyhow, I have been on the fence about tonneau vs shell. I've had four tacos now and have done both. Really, I just use it for surfing gear and camping gear etc. We always camp in a tent (or stay in a hotel) when we travel. It's a short bed so no one is sleeping in the back. I don't know that I need the shell, but I kind of missed one. Don't love the weight or look, necessarily, but like being able to hop in and have the dog hang. It's nice without the shell to put the tailgate down in the desert and lie down and look up at the stars without a shell (and the right tonneau).

I'm just all over the place right now on which way to go. But it's fun to do the research. You know how it is. Good problems. I'll post up which way I go. I've found a Leer 100xl and a snugtop rebel - both brand new here in LA.

Who has a fav tonneau? Yes, I've read all the threads

 

Might I suggest what I am doing.. I am running a Softopper in the summer months and a tonneau in winter. Takes less than an hour to swap over the rails to mount either. For me, being able to store the topper is a requirement... I have no room for a hardshell. It also does not affect ride height even with stock springs in back except when loaded with camping gear.
