Finding 14" tires?

A nice coating of freezing rain and black ice today gave me an opportunity to fishtail out on the highway. I'll take it as a sign: time to replace my tires. Been meaning to for several months.

Don't know that much about tires, so I thought I'd ask around, as my 1996 2.4L RWD Tacoma has 14" wheels and apparently my options are now limited!

Currently it has Bridgestone Dueler A/T's that are 225/70/R14's (have been on since I bought it) but I checked the door frame and there it says the truck came with 195/75/R14's. Today aside, I've been fairly happy with A/T tires, but don't necessarily need them, as long as I find something durable; I do take it off the pavement when I get up in the mountains or out in the desert.

I did find the General Grabber A/T 2 tire in a 27X8.5R14 size. Here's the link:

The at2 is an awesome tire, I have them in 33s, and my buddy has them on his utv (30s I think) and we love em. Great tire. I have about 20k on them I think and they look brand new. Mild offroad and they did great for what I put them through, mostly highway and job site though and they are very road friendly as well.

 

With black ice, monster truck tires will break loose.

Have you considered chains or studded tires?

 

At2 is studable. Hardly a monster truck tire.

 

He wasnt implying the at2's were monster truck tires, lol. He was just making the point that when it comes to some nasty black ice it dosent matter what tires you have you will be sliding...

 

Haha, yeah I realize no year round tire will make friends with black ice. I couldn't even make it up the highway exit ramp...had to pull off and put on my chains. But my tires do need to be replaced. I'm leaning towards the AT2's, but I don't know anything about that size (27X8.5R14). Anyone know if they would fit on my truck?

 

Turns out the rims on my truck are 5" wide, which according to the tire shop is not wide enough to safely mount the Grabbers. I did find a good deal on Nexen A/T tires that are 205/70/14. Wanted to check in with folks in the forum: would that tire size fit on 5" wide rims and work on my Tacoma? (stock size was 195/75/14). Anything to be wary about? Appreciate your thoughts.

 

Go with the at2 they are a solid tire and you want have any problems with them and if for some reason you do a have a problem General Tire has the best customer service I have experienced when it come to tire companies. I have also seen a-lot of 5 luggers around SoCal with them so they must be good on them to.

 

I had a set of 235 85 R16 General Grabber AT2's before my current set of tires. I wheeled them a lot and they held up very well. They did really well in rain and snow. I'd recommend them for sure.
I'd say the only down side to them is they tend to be a bit heavier. Although that could that the 235 85 16's are E rated too.

 

I'd agree they are heavy depending on size and load rating. Running LT245/75-R16 Load Range E

 

None the less I'd buy them again.

Yeah I wish I could do the Grabbers, they seem really durable and good in all kinds of weather! But I'd need 6" wide rims, and I'd rather not buy new wheels right now. Think my current tires (225/70/r14) might also actually be too wide for the rims, and that could be why they are wearing/developing cracks.

Are the stock rims too narrow for the Grabbers? I currently have G
BFGoodrich A/T, but they aren't available now in 14".
