Finding replacement key

I'm down to one key, misplaced my other a while back. How should I start to get another made? Been searching everywhere and cant find much info. FYI, it is the smart key or whatever you call it. Has an actual key in the fob, but merely having the fob on you will automatically open the drivers door and such

 

You really have 2 choices.

1. Call some local locksmiths and see if they are equipped to program key fobs and what they have to offer.
2. Go to the dealer.

I'd do both and compare what the cost is. A locksmith likely won't be able to provide an OEM fob, just an equivalent, but they will likely be cheaper than the dealer. How much cheaper and what an OEM fob is worth to you will feed into the decision.

We bought a used 2015 Corolla for my daughter (who still doesn't have her license) that only came with one key, so I need to do the same, just dragging my feet.

 

Same. I misplaced the first key about two years ago and between being forgetful, a procrastinator and a cheap skate, I'm just now getting serious about it. Thank goodness I haven't misplaced this one in the meantime..... Just been dreading it, had to replace one for an 07 GMC Sierra I had and it was extremely pricey and it wasn't nearly as technological as this thing.

Do yourself a favor and pick the option where you send a picture of your key and they cut it for you. Much easier that finding a place after the fact.

Just looked at Tom’s and seems reasonable, physical key. +$100. Sale $65. Rental of programmer $60. So about $125 seems reasonable

 

To be fair, I didn't say ONLY 2 options, just provided 2 options.

Thanks for the Tom's Key reference. I have a question out to them now -- my single key works to start the vehicle, but the remote lost pairing to lock/unlock the doors (vehicle sat with a dead battery for a while over the pandemic). Tom's says you need to have a working key, but no info on whether the remote needs to be working properly as well. I'm hoping their programmer can fix the pairing, but we will see what they say. Their key cutting seems to be a bit expensive ($50 just to cut a key?), so I have an inquiry out to a local locksmith as well.

 

A quick note in regards to Tom's.

Tom's Key is a legit business that I've used in the past with good success.
However, I just sent my most recent rental programmer back for the deposit refund with no joy this go-round.

The problem with Tom's, should you run into one, is the fact there is no customer service. If something goes south, as it did for me this time, there's no phone number to call, no one to talk to, and repeated emails (their only means of customer support) will only result in form letter responses.. which is of course fine, if the information works. If it doesn't, and you respond asking for what the next step might be, you'll likely receive the same form letter response a second, or in my case, a third and fourth time.

Assuming you've done your due diligence and purchased the appropriate replacement, the process of programming a FOB or Smart Key with Tom's equipment is incredibly simple and straightforward. Just let it be known, in the unfortunate event there's glitch in the Matrix, you will in all likelihood be on your own. I'm on the fence ATM as whether or not to dispute this charge or just let this one go..

 

that sucks to hear, I was on the fence about getting a third key (yeah I am like that) just so I don't have to go in to scramble-mode if I am down to one.

My initial inquiry was answered quickly with an automated response pointing me to 3 knowledge articles with videos, but they didn't answer my question (will it be able to re-pair the remote if it is currently not working -- older Corollas had a method to fix this through a crazy sequence of key turns and opening and closing the driver's door, but this changed in later models to require a programmer). The email says to reply if those didn't answer my question, which I did, and they have yet to respond to me.

If I had them cut the keys, that would be ~$250 for 2 keys. If the local locksmith can do it for about that amount, I'd rather support a local business.

 

I lost my original key.

I ended up getting a lexus key card from a Toyota dealer online and downloading Techstream and programmed it myself. I had the dealer cut the key in the card for the door.

 

A local dealer cut two keys for me for $15 each; dealer said if it were an old two-sided key, it would have been FREE.

The keys I had cut were the ones that slip into the FOB. I supplied the keys from eBay or somewhere at this point unknown to me.

Someone with Techstream may be of some help in programming the FOBs. I've not done it.

 

Here's one I got and programmed myself with Techstream. Compared the circuit board to what came with the truck and it is OEM. The body (back) just doesn't have the Toyota logo. Never got the actual key cut because I rarely use it. Locksmith prices are usually pretty good (~$100 to program) when I had to use one for another vehicle.

I had a key fob programmed with spare key for my ‘05 Saleen Mustang. IIRC, independent shop locksmith charged me in the neighborhood of $175, less than half what a Ford dealer wanted for the same job with OE components. We all should know those spic and span dealership facilities Toyota mandates aren’t cheap.

 

I got a reply from both Tom's and a local locksmith. The local locksmith will do a key for $140, and he charges $30 to "try" the programming -- no guarantee that he can fix the pairing issue. Tom's believes that their programmer will correct the remote pairing issue as long as there is not anything physically wrong with the vehicle (blown fuse, faulty component). So at this point I think I will give Tom's a shot -- I can get 2 keys for about what the local locksmith would charge for one, and it seems like I have about the same chance of getting the remote pairing fixed without going to the dealer.

Only for vehicles with traditional turn-key start. It will NOT work with vehicles with a push button start (“smart” key).

Yes.
They send you the programmer based on your make, model, year and key type.
If there is any doubt, they will ask you for your VIN as well.
