Fix-A-Flat

I picked up some used aluminum wheels for a project truck and was trying to clean them up. The inside of one is totally gunked up with dried fix-a-flat, I tried scrubbing it off with scotchbrite and it did absolutely nothing, any ideas on how to get that stuff off?

 

Dynamite?

A co-worker used our sandblaster to clean his up but his was steel wheels.

 

Try WD-40. Works on Plasti-Dip.

 

I'd try Acetone.

 

Brake clean aught to do it, get the good stuff, the Chlorinated Red CRC branded can.

Advance usually has it 2 cans for $5 around me.

Other wise try some heat and maybe a nylon bristle brush wheel on a die grinder.

 

Thanks for all the input, WD-40 didnt take it off, acetone will be my next try. Dont have to make this perfect but want the heavy residue off.

 

So I did some research.. Fix-a-flat is composed of Polyolefin. The only real way to dissolve it is high temperature xylene.

 

Thanks for looking into that, looks like it's gonna stay in there, lol.

 

^Brake cleaner to soften, then wirewheel with a power drill. Depending on how thick the coating is, it may throw off the tire balance.

 

I did notice that wheel had larger and more balance weights attached, guess that junk can affect balance.
