Help me understand this; you saying there is a federal law requiring all trucks with a flat bed or ute tray to stop at weigh stations?

    I do not believe that.

No, there is a federal emissions requirement.

Then each state has its own standard to be upheld. It is against federal law to alter or modify those federal standards. If your state chooses to have standards that include inspections( visual or otherwise), then you can get dinged for modifying your fuel system(which includes your fuel filler neck).

The flatbed is an entirely different issue that involves GVWR’s and commercial/non commercial licensing. Those are state transportation issues. The DOT has guidelines and most states adhere to those.

    Bureaucracy at its finest.

Can you post a link to the standard? I've been looking but I'm not seeing much.

I wish I had it handy. I’ll dig back into that onion again when I can get some extra time.

Wikipedia touches on the standards here:
    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_vehicle_emission_standards

But I remember reading through the actual California Air Resource Board requirements and standards. It will take me more time than I’ve got at this moment. But I will follow up on this. I do know that anything above a GVWR in CA is partially exempt from CARB compliance( or are only held to meet a lower standard, especially diesel drivetrains).

Yeah I'm really curious about it because you see companies like CM converting trucks to flatbed, and then you've got all the utility beds that various companies make. Either they're all not modifying the fuel filler, or running afoul of the law, or there's some way to comply.

Most of the vehicles that CM targets are above that 8500 GVWR’s threshold that sets them apart. Our trucks don’t come close to that. So, are held to the regulars CARB standards.

And you’ll also notice that their newer models are now being built to comply with factory fueling locations being upheld. As the regulations get tighter, the industry find work around a to comply.

It’s one of those little things that most aren’t aware of due to the nature of our trucks being so small compared to the larger commercial trucks and their ability to be held to different regulatory standards.

A smog tech here in California can fail your 1/2 ton Ford w/ a flatbed if your fuel filler has been modified and you haven’t reclassified the truck to have a larger GVWR.

    Murky Waters...

Ahh. CARB though. Not all states are subscribing to CARB yet.

There’s a growing list of states that are enacting CARB standards as their own. It’s tough out there to have some fun!

Are these rated at all for hauling capacity?

How thick is the actual floor? 1/8? 3/16?

Weight of the assembled flatbed? I assume heavier than stock?

We use a 1.5" tall extruded floor, so textile strength is much higher. Simply put, you'll max out your trucks payload before you would the flatbed. No sheet and stick style like most other brands. This unit is strong.

We don't have a rating on them, but more than confident you could put 2 tons in there. We added Dobinson heavy load (1,000lb constant load capacity) leaf springs since we'll be adding the Canopy as well.

So as you see it assembled is 360lbs with the head board, side gates, tool boxes, fenders and deck itself. Just the deck and headboard weigh 305lbs. Your factory bed is roughly 225-250lbs or so.

Our previous deck had a 1" extruded floor and were rated for 4+ tons.
